I actually got some work done in my room today, rock! My room just gets filthy if I let it go, and every time I clean it up I feel as if I suddenly have twice the space I did. My room is just simply too small for clutter. I got a corkboard, so some of my clutter is pinned up there. The cork bulletin board is an invaluable tool for any packrat.
I finally got out to see a show at the new
Paradox! It's pretty awesome, I gotta say. It's built onto the Mars Hill Church (by whom it was always funded, even if few people knew it), and it's a pretty nice space. Now, the only band playing tonight that I heard beforehand was
The Loved Ones, and they're leaning more towards a pop-punk sound, though they also remind me of Against Me!, sometimes. Naturally, I was surprised that the rest of the band were hardcore. The first was
Sinking Ships, who were ok, but nothing to write home about. Next up were
The Shook Ones, apparently from Bellingham. They were actually pretty good, and I got to see some hardcore dancing! Hardcore dancing makes me GRIN. They look so silly, but who fucking cares? They're out there, pushing lawnmowers and picking up change and...sometimes they look like they're skanking backwards. It's awesome.
The Loved Ones were tantuckingfastic. I wish I had heard their CD beforehand, so I would have known the songs. They played really well, I hope they come to town again.
At first, I wasn't sure I'd like
Paint It Black. Up until that point, the crowd had been surprisingly sedate. A half-hearted circle would get going, a few people would dance, but it was pretty low key. Then Paint It Black started up, and people really started to go nuts. They had a full-fledged circle pit going on from the first song. The band's stage presence was awesome as well, especially the lead singer. People applauded after the first song and he said, "I hope that was for you, because you guys are awesome. Was that a circle pit? Where we come from, everyone's too busy tough-guy posturing for that." Note to self: don't go to any hardcore shows in Philadelphia.
I really have to thank Paint It Black for reminding me how much FUN a hardcore show can be. I met up with my friend Adam and his friend Patrick...there we were, two Microserfs and a comic geek at a hardcore show. We're pretty much totally awesome.
Paint It Black, the Loved Ones and the Shook Ones kicked off a tour tonight, they're going down through California via Oregon. If you live in either of those states, you owe it to yourself to check this shit out. Rachel and Mikey, they're playing the Che Cafe on the 27th: BE THERE.
When I got home, Erin and I took her new high-powered laser pointer on the roof and freaked out drunk kids in front of the Rainbow. I love my roommates.
