In the end, I have decided to sign up for NaNoWriMo. The novel that I produce might be bad, but it will be an achievement to write the 50K - if I don’t hit a point somewhere in the middle where I simply run out of ideas. I’m currently on track, at about 8.5K. It’s a fantasy novel that is vaguely inspired by Slavic mythology. The characters are already running amok a little and doing whatever they want; I had to struggle yesterday to force Arben, my protagonist, to stay in line with what I think as his “Slytherin” characteristics. In short, November will be a month of madness.
I am considering joining the other NaNo participants in Slovenia when they meet this Saturday evening. (Maybe I should go meet the other nerds, I had told the wife.)
Anyway, Egypt was nice and sunny - now it’s back to rainy greyness and I’m already missing my daily dose of sunshine. I did do a few dives, but mostly saw beautiful corals - nothing bigger. Sharm El Sheikh was much better in terms of diving than the Hurghada area. (We were in Makadi Bay.)
Last Sunday, we had our skating training in the morning (usually it’s at 12:45), so not many people showed up. I was the only one in my advanced adult group, so I got our coach’s attention to myself, which was both great, because I learned a lot, and extremely exhausting - since her focus was on me and there was quite a bit more space than usually, she chased me around non-stop. I did more sit-spins than my thighs could take and when it came to jumping, I was gasping for breath in no time. It was awesome (but I felt like a loser a little, since it turned out just how bad my endurance is). I learned about the proper way to fold your hands mid-jump and how your shoulders need to move to keep the jump straight. The good news is that my spins are pretty much centered, even when I change legs mid-spin.
Also, I heard
La Strada on the (classical music) radio the other day and have been wanting to skate to it ever since. I know that it's a pretty over-used piece of music, not to mention that it doesn't really correspond with how I see myself as a skater (and that I'm not good enough to do it justice), but... it's got all these beautiful sweeping passages that I think would be so fun!
