Title: Right Before Your Eyes
Author: Jubilee
Characters/Pairings: Dirk/Sashi
Rating: G
Genre: Friendship/Romance
Note: This was a gift fic for my friend Sashi of her and Dirk. I think he's probably the best match for her out of all our ships we give each other. Seriously. This is an AU setting in a typical anime academy of course.

"This is so stupid," she said. "Why does this always happen to me?" Sashi sat on the edge of the fountain, her arms around her legs, making sure her skirt hugged against her skin. The beautiful garden of the academy surrounded her, luxurious buildings in the background.
"…why is it that every guy I like…every guy I get close to…why is it that they never see me in the same way? Is there something wrong with me…?" she lamented. "No…no of course not! Ha ha, there's nothing wrong with me! There's more wrong with the girls they blindly fall for!"
Feeling horrible about the recurring situation and remark about female peers she didn't even know that well, tears began to form at the end of her eyes. "I have a lot of friends…but that's all they'll ever be… People like me, yes, but not…not in the way I wish them to…"
Sashi buried her head in her lap, trying her hardest not to cry. She bit her lip but that still didn't suppress the whimpers escaping from her mouth. Hearing footsteps approaching, she looked up in surprise to find her best friend standing there, Dirk Strider.
"Hey."
"…hey."
"Something wrong?"
"N-No! Why would something be wrong?"
"For one you're crying."
"I just got pollen in my eye!"
"You're aware that there's no wind out here whatsoever at the moment."
She huffed. "…whatever."
The blonde teenager looked at his friend who was diverting her gaze away from him. He took a seat next to her at the fountain.
"Ariel told me what was up, about you and that douchewad."
"He's not a douchewad…"
"Yes he is. He made a spectacle about the whole thing."
Well, she couldn't deny that part.
"I'm sorry. I know you're not used to seeing me like this," she laughed lamely, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"What are you apologizing for? For crying?"
"Uhm…"
"That's nothing to be sorry about. If you need to cry, then cry. You have feelings and suppressing them won't do you much good. You'll bottle them up and release all these negative emotions later, then things will turn into a huge mess and everyone involved will end up feeling like shit. You don't want that Sash, do you?"
"No…"
"Mm, that's what I thought." He leaned his hands back and looked up at the sky. "Don't fret over that guy so much. He's not worth it."
"How do you know?"
"Because he's a complete moron to let go a wonderful girl like you."
"You're only saying that because you're my best bud."
"You know I don't spew bullshit from my mouth Sash. I always speak sincerely with you."
"Yeah. It's one of the things I like about you… Thanks."
"It's just the complete and honest truth. As much as I'd rather not admit it, guys are easily influenced because more often than not, a handful of them think with their dicks instead of their brains or hearts."
"So basically to be with anybody in this school I gotta be a slut?"
"No, you have to stop searching in the wrong places. Sometimes you just have to look right in front of you to realize what you have."
"Huh?"
"You've got your friends Ariel, Tori, Kandy, and Shii all willing to help you, showering you with love and comfort on several occasions. When you add me in to the count, that's a pretty big fanbase you've got."
Sashi giggled a bit. "Yeah, I guess you're right. I just wish…I just wish I knew why I wasn't desirable…"
Dirk turned to her. "Sashi, look at me." His tone was rather stern. The girl focused her view on him, taking note of his serious expression, even behind those ridiculous Kamina rip-off shades.
"Whoever tells you that you're not desirable needs to shut his fucking mouth and reassess his principles. You're beautiful, you have a wonderful sense of humor, you're caring to a great majority of people, and you try your hardest at everything you tackle."
"…you really think that?"
"Of course I do."
She smiled. "Thanks Dirk. That means a lot. I just hope someday a guy that likes me can tell me those exact words."
"He has."
Her eyes widened at his response. "…what?"
"I know it's sudden, but if I continued to cloak these feelings any longer, it wouldn't have ended well in the future when some random guy tried to go after you. I've thought a lot about this, so I decided to tell you how I really felt. Sashi, I really like you, and not in just a friendly manner. What I feel for you goes beyond that, but I understand if you don't return the sentiments." He continued blabbing on and on, the rest of his dialogue drowned out by Sashi's deep thoughts.
Dirk…Dirk likes me…? Wh…What? How long has he felt like this? She felt her cheeks heating up. Oh God. What am I supposed to do? Do I like him back…? Well, I've always thought he was pretty hot and he looks fucking fantastic without his shirt-no Sashi, be serious! Ugh!
She felt a flick to her forehead.
"Ow! What did you do that for?!" she exclaimed, rubbing the sore spot.
"You were having another internal struggle weren't you?"
"Why do you have to know everything?"
"I know you the best out of every person you're acquainted with."
"True…"
"Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. Dinner is about to be served. Let's get going."
He got up and held out a hand to her, Sashi taking it nimbly. As the blonde student started walking away, she shouted, "D-Dirk wait!"
The Strider stopped and turned around. "Hmm?"
"I…well this is going to sound really stupid but there have been times when I fantasized about us being…b-being together but it was in my dreams so I wasn't actually doing it! I mean, we've been best friends for a long time and I think you're a really great guy, a-and as nice as it sounds to be in a relationship with you, I don't know if I'll meet up to your standards so I think-"
She was silenced by a kiss.
"You make too many excuses," he said. "Meet up to my standards? Come on Sash. Stop speaking nonsense. How many damn times have I told you that I like you just the way you are?"
"…a lot."
"468 times to be exact."
"You counted?"
"I needed this quantity for future reference. Glad I was finally able to use it for something."
There was an awkward silence that hung in the air.
"…so…" Sashi began, her face red. "…what does this mean?"
"What do you want it to mean?"
"…I want it to mean something wonderful."
Dirk smiled. "Then that's what it'll be."
He held out his hand again to her. "Come on. We don't want to get stuck in the dinner rush."
Sashi took his hand happily. "Okay." Dirk kissed her forehead and she gave a soft giggle, feeling ever cheerful the longer she looked at his sincere smile.
She finally stopped searching.

A/N: I actually really like this. I just hope I got Sashi's character right, as well as Dirk's. It's easier to write for fictional characters. Actual people is a bit more difficult.
