Finally something I can type about.
Yesterday my father was supposed to have a meeting with the people in charge of the nursing home where my grandmother has resided for the last 13 years or so. Not all of this time has been spent in the nursing home side, this place also has an assisted living side where the residents live in their own apartments, but eat meals in a cafeteria, etc etc.
He missed it. He got a call in the afternoon (wherein he apologized for missing the appointment) when they told him that they were going to call hospice on his mother. She has stopped eating solid/finger food and is now fed a puree by a nurse. She's no longer speaking. They've seen a marked downward spiral in her physical appearance. They believe she's in the final stages of dementia/alzheimer's.
She was the best baker I ever knew. She'd bring dessert every sunday night to my parents house, while she was still living in her condo. She hasn't baked in probably 11 years, maybe more. The last time I saw her she just kept playing that hand over hand over hand, slide your hand from the bottom and put it on top game over and over.
A couple month's ago one of the other residents called her a bitch and she smacked him upside the head.
I can imagine my 87 pound grandmother hitting anyone. Or having it have any kind of effect.
We're going to see her this weekend.
