City Hall

We went to City Hall today. We had wanted to visit it for a few times but had not done so due to various reasons. I must say that it was pretty disappointing as there was nothing much there. It was 3-storey high and looked really majestic and pretty on the outside. When we went in, there was a vast space in the middle of the place and there was an art exhibition there. There are seriously many art exhibitions and concerts around this place. The people in Copenhagen are really extremely cultured. As there were no guided tours today, we were unable to see the rooms used for the meetings. It was quite a disappointment. However, we will definitely go for the guided tour another day. J

At the City Hall, we went to see the Jen Olsen’s World Clock. Set going in 1955, the clock features a 570000-year calendar plotting eclipses of the moon and sun, solar time, local time and various planetary orbits - all with incredible accuracy. It is seriously fascinating to watch the clock moving though I do not fully understand how it works. The clock is made up of many gears and the slowest movement of the clock takes 25753 years which the clock’s fastest wheel makes a turn in 10 seconds. The clock is so accurate that it would only deviate 0.4 sec in 300 years. It is totally amazing!!! Really glad that I was actually able to view this clock that is considered to be the most complicated but most accurate clock in the world.

After that, we went to an organ concert near City Hall. It was held at a church and many people turned up for it. I was really surprised that the people who turned up were of all age groups and were from all walks of life. Although the concert was an hour long and I felt was rather boring, I could see that most people there were really enjoying themselves and were clapping really hard when the man playing the organ came to take his bows. I feel that the people here do really appreciate the fine arts and are able to enjoy the performances fully. Perhaps, just perhaps, I might become just as cultured as them by the time I leave Copenhagen.
