This entry will probably be too long, so I'm leaving the drama ramblings for another time.
I finished this book like 5 days ago? (it does seem longer though).
I think I liked the second half of the previous book better than this one. Or actually, from the second half of the previous book to the first half of this one. It has plenty of omg moments but when it was over it didn't leave me as excited as when I finished ACoK.
I was kinda expecting Robb to die for many reasons, people in the fandom kept going on an on with the red wedding this the red wedding that. Truthfully I wasn't sure if it would happen in this book or in the next one but my guess was that it could be either Joffrey's wedding, or Edmure's. My candidates were Robb, Catelyn and Jeyne (but Jayne ended up not going). Or I guessed it could be some kind of massacre in Joffrey's wedding because of the Dorne people. Also, Robb made Jon his heir. I don't know if it will be relevant for later but... if you make someone your heir onscreen it usually means you'll die. Catelyn's storyline was getting stale too. It was exciting before because, plotwise, stuff was actually happening. But once she freed Jaime nothing happened in her pov chapters anymore, and it started to get boring again. She had nothing to do except being reproached for freeing Jaime, she was also going to be sent to this guy's house and I was like yeeeah, I don't think so. It felt so much like her story was over... so it kinda made sense to kill her, from a storytelling pov (but yeah she's back) I don't resent her for her bad decisions because although what she did was dumb and had some really bad consequences for them, it provided us with a new and exciting pov(Jaime's). Plus all that nagging from Robb's men or whatever was so annoying. God those ppl were so whiny, I don't care if they were right. I was pretty sure something would happen as soon as they arrived to the Frey's and they treated them so well.
Honestly I didn't care about Robb and Catelyn as characters (especially Robb) but their deaths left me with a feeling of "...now what?" The war felt too onesided after that (although only for a while). Would I have to root for Stannis? For me, reading what they did to the bodies etc. was more upsetting than the actual murders. I didn't really mourn them, but that event affected every other storyline I was interested in (except Bran's). Arya's quest to reunite with her mom, Brienne went to King's Landing to bring Sansa and Arya back, Catelyn had yet to know that Rickon and Bran weren't dead. Once all that tension was broken, it was as if someone pushed the reset button and I had to get invested in the story again. I wasn't as glued to the book as before. Joffrey's death had that reset effect too, although not in the same way for me. There's Tyrion storyline, and I guess we'll see more of Dorne as well. Also, Sansa's. All of them are kinda restarting.
Btw, I was really annoyed with how Arya & gang were taken prisoner AGAIN when they were traveling to the Tullys', I was like, she's never going to reach her destination is she. It felt like these novelas in which they find a way to s t r e t c h the plot by keeping the main characters separate forever, and when you think they'll finally meet the episode ends (and it's Friday and you have to wait until Monday to know what happens next) and in the next episode they end up missing each other by a hair.
I liked the Jaime POV chapters. I actually really like Jaime because he's so delusional. By the end of the book Jon's pov was duller than ever, seriously, I like him as a character but no1curr about the Wall and the 31324 different ways they fought the wildings. The only exciting part was wondering who had come to their rescue at the end. I'm really not looking forward to his adventures as lord commander of the wall or w/e, at first I thought being Robb's heir would give another spin to his story but I don't think so anymore. Seems like he'll just stay where he is doing boring stuff. Dany was starting to bore me too. Her pov chapters are not unbearable to read or anything, but it kinda felt way too disconected from the 'main' story (I've been told she's not in FfC?). On the other hand I'm getting more interested in Stannis and Bran's storylines.
About the show,
I'm still having the same issues with it, not enjoying it as much as I could because the book is too fresh in my head. Arya's scenes have been dissapointing for me. Arya in Harrenhal was basically my favorite part in the book, and in the show is just not the same. I mean, I still like her and Jaqen but... yeah. Also, I'm SO OVER Arya and Tywin's witty convos. It was nice the first time but now is like please stop. Robb's part is just whatever. Jaime's conversation with his cousin was way too long, seriously, I thought it would never end. Other than that, I liked the rest. Oh and also, what are they doing with Dany's story? When her dragons were stolen I was like what, and then in the last episode everything with the Thirteen and XXD and the other guy. I'm not sure I understand what's going on, really. lol
