Ferelden adjoins The Orlesian Empires (Orlais), but these countries have never been the good neighbours. Orlais is currently the largest and the most powerful nation in Thedas. It has a long history consisteding of ingenious conspiracies and elegant murders. Every significant person there takes part in the Game - a tangled mix of violence and intrigues that represent an the essence of the life in Orlais. It’s already hard to say either whether the Game is a way to reach power and wealth in this society or it just hepls to avoid boredom. Therefore, the Orlesians simply despise rough and forthright Ferelden style. Otherwise the Fereldens from their side consider the Orlesians to be disingenuous and vicious bastards. These nations have so few touch points that the conflicts are unavoidable.
Orlais is also famous for its extravagant culture and fashion. Both men and women wear very elaborate costumes with a lot of fineries. In public, they also wear masks of various kinds that indicate social standing status. For a noble person to be seen without the mask it’s is almost the same that as to walk naked. This community is permeated of saturated by conventionalities and full of complicated rules which dictate every step of its members.
Val Royeaux, the capital of Orlais, is one of the most beautiful and impressive cities of Thedas. It’s also the center of the Andraste’s Chantry and home of its head, the Wight Divine.
In fact, a legal title of the head of the Chantry is just "the Divine", and it's really not polite to mention in Her Holiness presence that the Black Divine exists. The Chantry of another important country of Thedas, the Tevinter Imperium, always had a peculiar understanding of the main ideas of Andrastian religion. They have separated from the common Chantry a thousand years ago and, in contradiction with contrast to the idea of a female leader, the Tevinter Chantry has chosen its own Divine who is, in the first hand firstly, a man, and in the second hand secondly, a mage.
It has caused an unsolvable conflict and then a war, where nobody has succeeded. So, nowadays both Divines prefer to ignore each other and to rule their parts of the Chantry. They remember that there are the malicious heretics who have to be humanely destroyed humanely in the name of Andraste someday, but they have tasks that are more urgent for now.
