Gee, I love the internet! I just found an audio clip on youtube of a play my husband and I saw during our honeymoon to London - 25 years ago!

I adore Cumberbatch's Sherlock (and enjoy Rober Downey Jr.'s too, and Johnny Lee Miller's), but I will always love Jeremy Brett's rendition - both on TV and on stage. He was magnificent!
There is also an wonderful German comedy "Der Mann der Sherlock Holmes war" - filmed in 1937 - with Hans Albers and Heinz Rühmann playing Holmes and Watson... well not quite, but that would be giving away the twist... when I watched it as a little girl, I fell in love with the characters right away. I find it amazing how Holmes is one of the most beloved characters ever. He survives everything, even tongue-in-cheek movies like "Without a Clue". Granted, not all Holmes movies are great, but most of them are at least interesting.
If you asked me who my favourite ficticious character is, on 8 out of 10 days I'd say Holmes. On the ninth day I'd say Spike, on the tenth something like The Doctor, Buffy, Dracula, or Malcolm Reynolds...
