I've resigned as Systems Chair and Systems Staffer at the OTW. It's been 4.5 years of really rewarding, engaging work. I've worked with a crew of really amazing volunteers and helped build something pretty damned huge from something much smaller. When I started at the Org we only had three puny servers, one for the Archive; we now serve millions of page loads a day.
The odd thing about being a SysAdmin is folks don't tend to notice them unless something goes wrong, but the wonderful staffers I've worked with, James and the rest (not sure if they would be comfortable with me naming them) work tirelessly anyway, put their backs into it and keep the servers up, find solutions, add hardware, and patch the bejesus out of the rough bits, and all without thanks for the most part. So I want to thank them publicly for letting me help guide them these past years.
Each one of them, and my web and ADT liaisons as well, were such a pleasure to work with. Volunteerism in its truest spirit.
I'm going to miss the hell out of them.
ETA: You can help say thanks too by offering your nickels and dimes
HERE. Having been on the inside, I can tell you all these servers, rackspace, hosting costs and bandwidth are seriously *NOT CHEAP*, and every day grow more expensive with more users accessing our systems! And volunteering is a marvelously fun way to offer thanks; the new volunteer board will be opening up soon.
(Well. At least this means more time for writing porn. :)
