The great can protect themselves, but the poor and humble require the shield of the law

Monday, August 31st, [day 92] mid afternoon

The conversation yesterday with Eris was the final clincher for me. Someone's gotta do something about the way things are goin' in this town. It doesn't hafta be me though. The sun's nice an bright today as if it approves of my upbeat mood. Not like yesterday, for all that it turned out pretty decent.

Took Sarge out for a ride since I didn't want to let him loose in the yard with the pumpkin there. I felt bad that he wasn't getting any out time, but I felt a little justified when he started making eyes at it. No, he'll just have to stay in his stall for now.
Once we were home, and he was safely ensconced, I ran upstairs to take a quick shower. I'm finished and getting dressed when I feel something. Almost like someone tapping me on the shoulder. At the same time Kitten runs across the apartment to the front door, scratching at the bottom and mrowling.

The Wards. Someone just knocked on the ward. *Huh, forgot how that felt*, pull my boots on and head to the door. Kitten shoots off and bounces down the stairs ahead of me, and then prances over to the front door of the office. I scoop her up before I reach for the handle to open it so that she doesn't rush out, and then swing the door open ( ... )

Soon enough there is a reaction. A scratching and mrowling at the door. Another cat. I chirp inquiringly at it. Before i can get a reply the door opens. Framing a tall red head dame, and yes in her arms is a kitten. It only takes her a moment to look down and spot me.

Well hello Chester. Do come in Mab says as she moves aside to let me enter.

"Greetin's Sheriff." I look up at the kitten squirming in her arms. "An to you too, Kit."

Can I get you something? I was going to make coffee, but I think we can spare some of this one's milk stash if you'd prefer.

"That's mighty nice a you. The milk would be my preference." I just barely keep from wrinkling my nose at the thought of drinking that bitter brew.

To show my gratitude at her hospitality I rub against her legs.

Bend over to set Kitten on the floor, and give Chester a hello-scritch as he winds around my leg. She zips right over to him and starts chirping and mewing at him as I head over to the coffee pot.
"Don't mind her, she gets excited when she sees other cats. Though," I pour a bit of milk out for him and a bit for Kitten, "I think you're the first one she's seen in person since we took her in here," I set the two dishes down on the front desk then pour the remain of my last pot into my coffee mug, "She's become quite the shoulder cat. And growing like a weed."

I move back across the room to the desk, and scoop Kitten up and plop her on the desk by one of the milk bowels before I settle in the chair. If Chester asks I'll help him up too, but I almost feel like it'd be sort of disrespectful to assume he couldn't make his way up, "So was this just a stop in to say hello, or more of a business visit?"

She bends over to scritch me and the kitten jumps down chirping and mewing at me. I can feel a pur starting deep inside so I rub my head against Mab's leg before sniffing at the Kitten and returning her greeting. Friendly li'l thing. I kinda hope to be around for her first heat. Tho I get the sense I'd need to ask permission from Mab before I knock her cat up.

Don't mind her, she gets excited when she sees other cats.I think you're the first one she's seen in person since we took her in here,

The sheriff goes an fetches two saucers to fill with milk before tending to her own drink.

"I'd say that's cause for excitement then." I say gravely with a bit of a twinkle in my eye.

She picks the kitten up and places her on the desk but waits politely for me, by sittin in her own chair, to make my own way up. Which doesn't take me any time. Then she gets right down to brass tacks.

So was this just a stop in to say hello, or more of a business visit?I take a drink of the milk first. Ah! Fresh milk! It's nice to have lots of generous ( ... )

I'm sorry Chester, no offense meant. I think I worded that wrong. What I mean is- can you see the nature of them? Like, what sort of magic it is?" I rephrase my question and pose it again. Then smile as Kit snuggles tighter to Chester and starts purring.

*I'm glad she likes him, but I'll have to keep an eye out. Don't want her getting too attached*

Lean back in the chair and stretch my legs out under the desk, "Purely an academic question. I know a couple things, and I can See a lot, but my theory is very sparse."

The kitten snuggles in closer and soon I can hear and feel her purring. so I curl up around her but continue talkin' to Mab. Who apologizes for wording her question badly and give a better version. What I mean is- can you see the nature of them? Like, what sort of magic it is?

"Yeah, i can feel or taste the different types of magic. I've seen an felt lots o' different kinds over the years. Your's feels like it has fae stuff in it. while Hermia's is pure human, untouched by any other power." I look up at her. "So do I pass the test?"

Purely academic my furry arse! "Well, if you ever wanna brush up on theory, I have lots of it and a heck of a lot of time on my paws. Les you got somethin' fer me ta do."

Right now all i wanna do is give in to Kit's purr and just relax and maybe have nice li'l nap. but not while i'm talkin' to the Sheriff.

I grin again, "Well, if it had been a test I'm certain you would have."

"I don't think now is the time to start, but I'd certainly enjoy it at some point," I stand up and grab my empty mug, "I should do a round or two for the afternoon, but you're welcome to stay here and keep Kit company for awhile, Chester. And you're certainly welcome here whenever."

She grins at me. Well, if it had been a test I'm certain you would have.

So in other words I did pass!

I don't think now is the time to start, but I'd certainly enjoy it at some point, She says, rising to her feet.

"Sure, just tell me when." I reply, twitching my tail as I'm far to comfortable to get up with her. And she notices. for then she adds.

I should do a round or two for the afternoon, but you're welcome to stay here and keep Kit company for awhile, Chester. And you're certainly welcome here whenever.

I wave a paw at her. "Thanks for the offer, Mab. I think I will stay awhile longer." I open my mouth in a yawn. "See you around."

With that, i finally give in and close my eyes. Already I can feel the purr losening in my chest.
