Day 58, Tuesday July 28th
Mid-afternoon
Marks' Ranch

Been a busy few days. Had a bit of a head in the morning Saturday. Smiled to think back on Friday, though. Been awhile since I spent the better part of a day with a friend. She even stayed past the ugly business with Tez and his... friends.

Did up another open-air cookpit for the market again. People are glad of the fresh meat. Smell draws them right in, too. Got some spices off a kid in from the farms, new stone (steel's still good but I go through stones pretty damn quick). Sold enough meat that I spent Sunday cutting and cleaning to be ready for the week.

Spent Monday mostly makin' leatherware for the post office boys. Dropped them off with a young man named Samuel - said he was Luke's brother. Bit sad he wasn't around - wouldn't have minded chatting a bit.

And Tuesday's rolled around again, and I'm back out at Marks'. Need the meat. Walking through the drizzle is nice - been hot and dry for awhile now. Look a bit closer at the house as I go by to the slaughterhouse. Looks a bit like the old Roman stuff from back in the old country. Maybe he is a god, and the idea seems easier than it did.

Open up the slaughterhouse and strip down to pants, boots, and a broad leather apron. Spend a few minutes sharpenin' my tools and setting them out on a table near the doors. Sold a lot of pork, so it'll be a pig today. Get a fire goin' under one of the big iron pots. Putter around a bit. Check the hanging carcasses. Got a few mature ones ready for the shop. Water's gettin' hot so I go get a pig. Manage to drag one out to the ramp and - *breathe in, raise hammer* - *breathe out bring the hammer down* - knock it out. Get the singletree in its hocks and haul it up. Cut the throat and catch the blood. While it's bleedin' out I check the water.

Almost boiling.
