They come all through the day, rabbits and squirrels and raccoons and birds. Their eyes and ears are bleeding when they drag themselves across the threshold. She sits in the parlor and waits for them, holds the knife for them to impale themselves. And she laughs. By the time night falls the room smells like a charnel-house and the floor is slick with blood. And she's not tired at all. Normally after this many readings she's trembling and almost ready to fall, but not now. Now she just keeps going. I'm not sure if she has more energy or if she's just pushing herself harder.
Finally she stops with the animals. Finally she sits back, closes her eyes, and I think maybe she's resting. But no, I feel the gathering of power, like the crackle of an oncoming storm, and she reaches out...
Oh hell no.
"That's enough, gauekoentzat," I say, standing up and crossing the floor to her. She's either going to melt her own brain or bring the town down on our heads, and I don't want either. "That's enough."
She smiles up at me, touches my cheek and the power dances on her fingertips, tingles along my skin. And as her fingers touch, her mind does too. It's not so different than what she usually does, she just touches with her mind and power as well as her hand now. At least now that I'm expecting it I know how to block her, to keep myself between her and the darker parts of me. I honestly don't know what I would do if she managed to call me out fully, but I'm sure it would end with her dead. And that would be one hell of a fucking waste. So I let her rub up against my power, bask in the glow like a cat before a fire.
And then-
....alright, I am really torn between shaking the hell out of her and laughing like a madman over the fact that I own this creature that can kill men from...over a mile away, shit. And untraceably at that. I mean, fuck, bet that scrawny little healer can't do that"...let's talk about not killing anyone unless I tell you to." is what I finally say. Really, too many people dropping dead of aneurysms is
