Death Note is Sherlock Holmes, I cannot believe I just thought this up now.
In Death Note, L is the bad guy but good detective hunting down Light and Ryuk. Light is the one with the death note. The one with the plan, the one who can see the bigger picture because he's in control of the situation from the beginning. He's the one taunting L to chase him and then his world starts spinning out of control and then he dies.
In Sherlock, Moriarty is L and he's got the metaphorical death note, but he is the bad guy who's in control of the situation from the beginning, he's got the plans and knows the bigger picture. He's the one taunting Sherlock to chase him, and then Sherlock gets close and he dies. Sherlock and John (Light and Ryuk) do not have the death note, and they are chasing Moriarty.
So Death Note is like... L is Moriarty but unlike Moriarty, he's a good guy while Light and Ryuk are Sherlock and John but unlike Sherlock, Light is actually the bad guy.
