But I don't know how to /fix/ it. It's completely screwed up their relationship, and it really bugs me how severelly badly I did this. I just don't understand it.

Talk to the other player? Can it be explained as a 'burp' in the relationship, some sort of a little misunderstanding between partners, and thus be temporary, yet not require a retcon?

So far, we've mostly just been getting by with ignoring it, but things are definately different. But, these things also happen, and we'll see what the future brings for them. They've grown in very different ways, to boot, so the friendship is strained as it is.
