I had my thoughts on what I wanted to post today more or less collected, but I'm still reeling from Satoshi Kon's death, especially after reading his farewell message. I'm serious, the man was a complete inspiration to me. It's all to say that I'm making the attempt, but I do apologize for any ineloquence ( Read more... )

For the record, I think you do an amazing job of balancing the mind-blowing pure awesomeness that these super-powered characters have and the real people that they are.

Blossom in particular manages to be very relatable, especially in the scene at the party where she suddenly finds herself alone and has no idea what to do [mostly because this is how I feel at parties, hahahaa]. And it's an organic development of the character, the leader girl who does everything and helps everyone but doesn't really know how to relax or socialize with people that she doesn't really know. I can relate. And yet she still does have a few close friends--that's what really sells it, what really makes her a real person and not just a character, and definitely not a Mary Sue ( ... )

Pretend I thought of this first in my previous comment What she said.

To me, the mark of what fandom likes to call a Mary Sue has always been poor writing; that is, not power -- and it's pretty messed up that if (general) you enjoy writing powerful women you're told it's 'unrealistic' and trashed -- but an elevation above all other cast members paired with contempt and poor treatment of the other characters with no repercussions. That is, someone actually treated as perfect within and by the text regardless of what flaws may exist. Blossom is not. Blossom has good traits; she also has screwed up traits. She feels very real. Conversely, Brick has tons of...impressive traits. He's also a straight-up dick ( ... )

They Are What I Say They Are! insanlyawesome August 21 2012, 01:26:21 UTC
I have so much to say but since my mind is a jungle right now, I'm going to let the monkey's pull back the veins to show what I really want to say: They can't be Mary Sues or Gary Stu's because they are More Than Human. (Haha, see what I did there? -Smug.- Oh yeah.) Not only are they superhuman superhero's, but they're also just HSer's. If I were a PPG I sure as hell wouldn't want to spend all my time fighting crime and doing nothing else. The Girls and the Boys are both finding their own areas to exceed in and because they're better than humans, they are the 'best in the land.'
Now, if you were to make a character, such as Cindy, JUST LIKE Bubbles or Buttercup or Blossom (meaning not just below her, but I think you understand that) without the whole obvious pimple--her being super-human--then that would be a Mary Sue. In my opinion, at least.
(God, does this even make sense? Do you get me?)

Basically, they are superhuman's that simply want a normal life and they just so happen to exceed in it.

"Almost every fandom has always traditionally been harder on female characters" Right on damn point.
You're making a pretty believable Blossom (and Buttercup, and Bubbles, and RRB, etc). Yes, she has all that but she's relatable, as others have pointed out in other commentaries (difficult in social interactions, bossy, a bitch when things dont go her way, naggy when it comes to stuff like "language", etc). If she didn't have all the other awesome things on her side, she'd be like the harsher stories portray her.

Also, of course she'd be damn hot I mean: ginger + long hair + pink eyes! Of damn course she's a sexy bombshell. Duh.

About Brick, well, I'm a girl and I wet my pants every time I think about him and his badassy Marty Suey self. So my hormones overtop any sort of rationalization about that :(

I got this trouble with gingers. Redheads. In general.
