I was going to go on for a little bit about the Mehserle trial, but you don't need someone else going on about this insanity, so I'll just say that I was somewhat affected- they had us evacuate at the Oakland museum before the verdict came down- and that things like this are one of the few events that truly scare me.
Went and saw Cyrus the other day. It's refreshing, and I mean this in all seriousness, that there are films now that aren't filled to the brim with people that are overly made up and ridiculously attractive. That said, it's also a great flick, chock full of fucked up people in dire need of a hug. Check it out if you want to be assured that there are worse relationships than the ones you've been in- and that even the bad ones aren't without a glimmer of hope.
And now a little something to brighten up this day:
Robert Wyatt appears to be the musical counterpart to Alan Moore. Musically, he leans toward an experimental sound- some rock, some jazz, and some stuff that just doesn't want to be pinned down. Observe the hodgepodge that is "Rock Bottom":
"Sea Song""Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road" Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain a somewhat softer version of Tom Waits. Despite their songs being about things like the electric chair, Satan and respite from torture, they manage to deliver the message in such a way that the words caress rather than attack. Appropriate for an album titled "Tender Prey":
"Up Jumped The Devil""The Mercy Seat (Video Mix)" Clearlake is one o' them indie rock bands. Their songs use words combined with melodies so infectious they can infect any nation except Madagascar. There are certain songs on "Cedars" that no human being can resist. I think these are among them:
"Wonder If The Snow Will Settle""Just Off The Coast" While they occasionally have some good opinions on music, Pitchfork is dead wrong about Elvis Costello's "Cruel Smile". What it is is a remix/outtake album using tracks from the earlier "When I Was Cruel". There are some real gems among this CD, chief among them a spectacular cover of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile". "Smile""When I Was Cruel No. 1" And to conclude I want to mention to awesome, batshit insane comics that came out today- Casanova and Scarlet. These are written by two of the best men in the biz; Matt Fraction and Brian Michael Bendis. To go into detail would veer into spoiler territory quite quickly, so I'll just say that the dialogue is awesome and the characters supremely memorable. Check 'em out.
