I've read a full half of a Captain America omnibus in the last few days, the first of what I hope will be three from Ed Brubaker, who has more than proved his mettle with this collection. In the hands of so many others, the man could have easily been made into a metaphor for much of the worst parts of what our country stands for, but instead Cap is put forth as a symbol for our better angels... but he doesn't always come down on the side of authority. He's got an innate sense of right and wrong that guides him to what he needs to do in each mission. If the writers of the movie have any sense, they'll take as much as they can from this run and put it on the screen.
Since Wednesday, I've seen four movies. First was Greenberg-- Ben Stiller's attempt at doing a dramedy. If you're at all familiar with Noah Baumbach (co-wrote The Life Aquatic, directed The Squid and the Whale) you know his movies are weird. No, weird isn't quite right. They're awkwardly quirky. I enjoyed this movie, but a lot of the issues Greenberg has hit close to home. He's out of work, has serious issues with women and has trouble making social connections in general. It's hard to watch at times, but it does have a message of hope for anyone that's ever felt they didn't belong.
Thursday at midnight, I saw Iron Man 2. I came out of it not sure how I felt about it, but I've moved to the consensus that most others have reached-- not as good as the first one, but still had great action and was thoroughly entertaining overall. Rourke and Rockwell were highly watchable, but as
phisinfinity put it, a lot of the time I was just going, "What the fuck am I watching?" But in a good way.
Last night, I went out to see a movie I had only heard about a few days prior-- The Good, the Bad, the Weird It's a kick-ass Western set in Manchuria of all places with an awesome score and great action sequences. There are one or two spots where it slows down a little, but on the whole I was either grinning or on the edge of my seat for most of the flick.
And today I saw El Secreto de Sus Ojos-- or The Secret In Their Eyes. I had forgotten that this film won the Academy Award for best Foreign Language Feature, but it was a very deserved win. It feels like the Spanish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in a lot of ways, and it certainly helps that it was based on a book. I'm always a sucker for a good murder mystery with a lot of well-executed twists, so if that sounds like it's up your alley too, give this a look-see.
Officially staying with
poiuppx the second weekend in June. Livid with anticipation. Hoping to get through my newly acquired ultimate cut of Watchmen beginning tonight and ending today or tomorrow, especially since I'm helping my mom install her greenhouse tomorrow. And when I say "helping" I mean myself and two burly hispanics are taking it off a truck and plopping it down somewhere in the backyard.
