Let me start this one out with a whopper- for those of you that don't live in the bay and/or don't watch the news, a few days ago, a cable, one that had been put up when some repairs took place a few months back, snapped on the Bay Bridge Tuesday night. I was on it when they were shutting the damn thing down. It wasn't too bad- mainly just scared witless that something was going to happen while I was waiting for whatever the hell the cops did before they decided it was safe for us to get the hell off there. One bit I think will always stick in my mind though- they shunted us all into one lane while they were assessing the damage or whatnot, and when we finally did start moving, it was just me and about 2 dozen other cars on the road. Maybe they were letting us through in groups, dunno- but point is, I could see the whole damn bridge, and I was doing 70, easy. I daresay that's a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Movin' on, seen a few movies these past coupla days.
Sunday I went and saw the new one from the Coen bros.- A Serious Man is about a gent by the name of Larry Gopnik. Things aren't so hot for the guy- his pot-smoking eldest's bar mitzvah is days away, his wife's trying to dump him for another man 20 years his senior, his out-of-work, gambling brother is making his home life that much more hellish, and to top it all off, a student he failed is trying to bribe him for a better grade. As dark as all that might sound, the Coens, in that amazing way they have with tales such as these, make the whole ordeal hilarious and even a little beautiful.
This one was just weird- the plot was as coherent as something directed by Spike Jonze can be, and there were plenty of visual delights, but the dialogue was just what is this I don't even... It also didn't help that I couldn't stop imagining James Gandolfini's character as Tony Soprano. Jilted breadwinner, taken out of the spotlight, made to look a fool by his woman- it just reeked of the man, it was hilarious at times. I guess I'm glad I saw it, but it's been hyped up- to a greatly undeserved degree.
Oh, and I want to mention something awesome I discovered today- a great little comic book shop in SF, Al's Comics. I found two Annihilation trades for $8- that's $42 off- and an entire set of back-issues from an out-of-print Wolverine series. It's a great little spot if you're in the Mission, definitely check it out.
Halloween's in just 2 short days-
cacophonyblood's coming into town, I've got a rockin' costume at the ready. Best believe I'll have pics for y'all after all's said and done.
