Not Living in Despair

As usual, not a lot going on over here... Little projects, miniature adventures- this past weekend began as I headed over to an advance screening of Zombieland. For being shy of 90 minutes, this one was a gem. Hilarious, badass and a brilliant take on a genre that's seen a surprising revitalizing in recent years. Check this one out if you get a chance.

Saturday, as I'm sure some of you were aware, was 24-hour comic book day. There was a small comic shop in downtown SF having a sale between the ungodly hours of 1-4am, but by God it was worth it- 50% off every trade paperback in the store- snagged up Decimation: Generation M, Ultimate X-Men Ultimate Collection 2, the first Ultimate Fantastic Four hardcover collection, and I even found the second volume of Cable & Deadpool, which you best believe is out of print. It's going to be a dark day when I actually earn enough of a paycheck to buy these things on a regular basis...

And today I busted up a ton of gravel and dirt so my mom could plant some vines to pretty up my dad's office. I shall surely be sore in the morning.

Finally, it's been a long time in the pipeline, but at long last I'm back to sending y'all some tunes:

The second disc of Ani DiFranco's "Reckoning/Reveling" is decidedly more morose than the first. But in all, it has a lovely sound and is underscored with a cautious hope- things may not work out for us all, but, to paraphrase another virtuoso, there is always one light that never goes out:
"Your Next Bold Move"
"School Night"

Mexican Institute of Sound have a CD, "Piñata", which has some very funky latin tunes. They manage to effortlessly mix jazz, hip-hop, rap and latin flavor into an album that's insanely fun to stroll along to:
"Escribeme Pronto"
"Para No Vivir Desesperado"

Girl Talk does something most people rarely, if ever, get radio play for, much less get paid to do- make mash-ups. His album, "Feed The Animals" is a sublimely beautiful work- each track has at the very least, one moment that takes at least two completely different songs from artists in different genres that you would never think to put together and then creates a sound that is nothing less than mind-blowing. This might be the best party record I've ever heard, and the fact that it can be used as such is the only reason I forgive the man for not simply releasing the CD as one continuous track- it really would work much better like that, but it's still an enrapturing work on it's own:
"Give Me A Beat"
"Here's The Thing"

This weekend is my father's birthday- he has elected to go down to LA to visit my brother, which means I will be seeing poiuppx at least one day. Excitement runs through my veins- I may have to see a doctor about that.

stuffing my ears, working hard/hardly working, at the movies, hittin' the comic stand
