There was a crystal vase full of daffodils on his bedside table. On the accompanying tag, signed in loopy purple gel pen, was the name Regina Berry.

Scrawled underneath were the required words of consolation.

I'm watching the sky every night for you.
Bat said Hi!

He knew he had taken a dose of poison the day he ripped that note apart and rearranged it.

However, it wasn't until six months later, when the circus girl with the blonde curls was seen sobbing in a District courtroom, that he realized that the poison had been his own.

Summary: She found her sister there a week after the accident.

Mimi had ordered a sleek red sports car from overseas just three months before. It was a gorgeous car - even Ini in her ignorance could see that. It was absolutely unthinkable to slam the doors, any kind of food or drink was forbidden inside it, it could not sit out in the sun for more than four or five hours at most - and by no stretch of the imagination was Ini allowed to drive it.

She found her sister there a week after the accident.

She was sitting in the driver's seat with her hands on the wheel, stroking the dark leather with an absentminded sort of detachment. She did not look up when Ini slid into the seat beside her - just continued to trace the indentations in the steering wheel that drew out the car company's logo.

She breathed in deeply, and Ini realized that the car was still fresh with the scent of new leather. Mimi shifted and wrapped her fingers around the shift. “Hi.”

“Are you, like, okay?”

There was a brief silence, then Mimi gave an airy sort of laugh before reaching up and flipping the overhead mirror down. She had barely taken a second to glance at herself before flipping it back up again. “God, I love this car, Ini.”

Somewhere within her, something twisted painfully. Ini smiled anyway. “Yeah, I, like, totally know what you mean.” She patted her seat, and leaned forward to try and catch her sister's eye. Mimi was tracing the edges of her window. “... It's just, like, you know. Hard to get used to.”

Mimi did not respond. “Like, it's kinda weird, you know?” Ini said, after a moment, “It's all, like, flipped and stuff.”

Mimi tapped the gas pedal with her foot, her brows furrowed. Then her head snapped up, and suddenly Ini was met with an intense stare. Mimi's skin was pale and drawn, and her eyes seemed sunken, framed by dark circles. Ini tried to force herself to stare back, but somehow her gaze was driven to the carpet. “... Mimi, look, I...”

“You just don't get it, do you Ini?” She had never experienced having her sister look at her this way. She could feel it, on the back of her neck. A burning sort of tingling sensation, as if something poisonous had bitten her. “... Get out of my car.”

A silent moment passed, and Ini glanced hesitantly at her sister. Mimi was turned away, her eyes closed, and was tapping the horn, gently enough so as not to set it off. She breathed in deeply. “... God, I love this car....” Her voice shook and cracked.

Ini let herself out, taking great care in closing the door behind her. She rubbed the back of her neck as she made her retreat, and for a split second thought the sensation would never go away.
