Good fun day.
vialka are great live, melb/bris kids should endevour to see them before they go home to france. kind of like a softer, slightly more avant Lightning Bolt i guess you could say... with a guitarist instead of a bassist and much more variety in his playing... lacks the sheer power of LB but they play more conventional song structures and some of the guitar lines are really nice, almost middle eastern kinda sounding? probably way off there, and am showing my musical ignorance. but they're very worthwhile.
gulpepsh made me regret thinking beatboxing was a completely shit trend... this guy was pretty ridiculous, stumbling around the stage like a madman with a mask on, doing some pretty abrasive beatboxy stuff... the merzbow of beatboxing perhaps? once again, try to see him. very interesting. and doddodo was cute, doing some nice casio-style beats and interacting onstage with gulpepsh.
eric kuhlman was pretty fucking weird in a lovely way. stood out by not being a skinny early-20s artist, he sang odd, somewhat depraved stories that just happened to be fucking hilarious. sang alone on an acoustic guitar. i'd like to hear some recordings.
rose turtle ertler was some pretty sweet ukelele with beats and effects... kind of joanna newsom cross sarah blasko maybe? it's hard to draw comparison. some sweet little ditties.
winner were shit, in a curiously endearing way. grown men in leather pornstar shorts and corsets, full body sparkling latex suits, wigs, makeup. attempting to do covers with a midi backing track to make sure their mullet wig wearing, cross dressing spandex and leather train doesnt go completely off the tracks. amusing at times. tainted love suited them. but i was bored a lot of the time.
garbage and the flowers seemed really good and moody, and i sat there kicking myself for getting slightly inebriated and totally out of the mood for that kind of thing, because they seemed pretty grand. i got over it and walked to oporto's. maybe i'll get another stab.
kiosk... most of you probably know what to expect when it comes to sound. good set, and i was suprised (again) at just how good jack is getting at drums. and angie seems to look more confident and is getting tighter on her guitar. and there were a couple of newies, it seemed... very enjoyable as always.
naked on the vague were good, and lucy seemed more involved than last time i saw them... they seemed pretty 50/50 when it comes to involvement, which is a good thing. they have a CDR ep, which i got but havent listened to. but it should be good.
on/ox were good, but seemed a bit bored with what they were doing.. going through the motions i guess. they played only 3 songs, and did i hear them say its their 2nd last show, or is my head fucking with me?
that's a lot more than i intended to write.
i was gonna crash at lucas' but he didnt reply to my message late at night, i think he was asleep.
he told me earlier to go through the back but i felt awkward so i got a nightrider home and there were no taxis... so i went on an epic walk for a few km and when i was only a couple of k's from home i scored a taxi the rest of the way,... walking in tight jeans at 2am sucks. sounds like those tigers fans are getting feral.
oh, and die!die!die and wolf & cub were gorgeously brilliant on saturday, as was howl's moving castle (SEE IT ASAP MARIA!)
it's been a nice weekend.
and tomorrow i can even sleep in.
ive spent *all* of my 2 weeks of savings that i amassed before brisbane (it was the most ive ever had!), but it's ok. its been lots of play and not much work since its school holidays and there's plenty of shows and plenty of 15 year olds to do my terrible job for cheaper. things will be back to normal soon.
end dull LJ ramblings.
