Like others above have said, it could be a UTI with crystals which commonly causes more problems in males due to the smaller diameter of their urethra. Or so I was told by my vet when my male cat starting peeing on my bed. My cat needed surgery on his no-no parts and became a different cat afterwards, unfortunately. He would never allow anyone but me near him after that and would bite and scratch anyone else. Especially vets. Unfortunately my cat attacked my new-born son a few years later and I had to find a new home for my poor old grumpy kitty.

It may not be that dire in your case but it is URGENT that you take them to the vet immediately. If a cat's urinary tract becomes totally blocked, it can die in a matter of hours. If they find crystals in your cat's urine, your vet will know what to do and will recommend a low-ash diet to prevent re-occurrence.

May I recommend you get one of those quilt-top washable mattress covers to protect your new mattress. They're not like the nasty old rubber sheets our grandmas had, they're quite comfy and you won't even know there's rubber under the quilt-top. Plus they help keep the dust-mites down or so they say. Many places that sell mattresses sell these good quality covers too.

Your old mattress probably can't be cleaned sufficiently to get all the cat-pee smell out unfortunately.
