Historical RPF

The Queen and the Soldier, by Hafren
'She has never seen why being what the world calls old should change the way she looks at handsome young bodies.' This clever weaving together of legends brings the 10th century Queen Gunnhild to life

Labyrinth

Invited, by Astolat
'...black leather glove taking substance under her fingers, the knife-sharp points of his long glittering jeweled coat drawing themselves out of the night.' This vignette series gives an interesting take on the complex relationship between Jareth & Sarah, fairy tale & real life, with appropriately magical descriptions of the Goblin King. The final piece is the strongest

Rock Legends, by Danse Macabre
'Once, a long time past, he summoned the stones from their beds of earth. Now they called to him, a constant murmuring only he could hear.' An unusual short, beautifully bittersweet

Seasons Change, and the Scenery, by Kernezelda
'Goblins short and tall flooded the market, squirming between stalls, popping up under tables, clanking and creaking and generally making a nuisance of themselves.' This unusual & inventive piece explores Hoggle's past. A remix of the ficlet Seasonal Work, by the late Mistral Amara, also recommended

Twelfth Night

The Pirate and the Puritan, by Shayheyred
'Antonio spat into the murky water, glowering at the ripples he caused. Fucking Illyrians and their fucking pompous airs, like their fucking Duke Orsino and Orsino's new fucking brother-in-law, the faithless Sebas-- He spat again.' Twelfth Night lends itself to slash sequels, but this isn't a pairing I'd ever envisaged. Shayheyred renders it surprisingly believable in this noir take on the play. Great fun

Watership Down

The Story of Marli-hrair and the Black Rabbit of Inle, by Edonohana
'We call her Marli-hrair [mother of a thousand] because she gave birth to so many large and healthy litters. What her real name was, nobody knows, nor does anyone now remember the name of her warren.' A beautiful & moving tale within a tale, which captures the feel of the original perfectly
