Close your eyes?

I wasn't going to write anything about Close My Eyes (which I rented in my Rickman retro), but then I realised that it's actually on tomorrow (Sunday) in the BBC4 Stephen Poliakoff season (aka puff for his latest, Gideon's Daughter, also on Sunday).

It's the worst film I can recall with pretensions to being good. The dialogue ranges from stilted via stagey to mockably appalling. The leads (Saskia Reeves & Clive Owen, both early in their film careers) are both simply awful, with or without their clothes*. Rickman does his usual irresistible smoulder routine, which -- as he's the cuckolded husband -- just makes the plot even less believable than it might otherwise have been. And the subplot with the guy dying of AIDS, well it just didn't do it for me, either literally or metaphorically.

*The best laughs come from the lengths to which the production team go to avoid showing Owen's genitals. (Think IWRY.)

Interested to know what other people think about CME or Poliakoff in general. I've rarely been impressed with his stuff, but maybe I've just picked the rotten ones? Or perhaps it's the Thatcher era I can't bear recreated? (I finally got round to The Line of Beauty in St Anton & abhorred it.)
