☓ Age: 19
☓ Personality: Overly laid back, Matt is a gamer till the end. He doesn't get angry easily, but he's not a push over either. Probably why it's so easy for him to be able to be around Mello so much when the blond throws anger fits all the time. His general outlook on the world is dim, and he really doesn't care much for the affairs of others. If things happen, they happen. Even though he was always third place behind Mello and Near, he never let it bother him nor did he try to change that fact. Unlike Mello, who was always striving to be the best, Matt just generally didn't care about the little race. Though he was willing to help Mello achieve his goals.
Always seen wearing orange tinted goggles with his face buried in some game or another, Matt's a bit of a dork at heart. He'd be the type of guy who would go to hot topic and think it amusing to pick up one of the MP or HP energy drinks they have there despite said drinks tasting like shit. It's the thought that counts. With his laid back attitude there's really very few things that are capable of pissing him off. Hurting his friends or a game freezing before he can save would do it though. Yes, friends and games are obviously of equal importance. He wouldn't have it any other way, despite how much it annoys the crap out of said friend.
Though laid back doesn't mean polite and nice to everyone he sees. Naturally, growing up with Mello Matt has a bit of a mouth on him and has a tendency to be a smartass occasionally when he feels it's needed. He gets bored fairly easily and always needs to be doing something with his hands and mouth, sitting still is never good for him. Be it smoking, playing with his video games, messing with cameras or playing around on a computer he always has to keep his attention focused on one thing or another. Without something to keep him distracted he doesn't get annoyed as some people would. Instead he focuses his built up energy on annoying whoever happens to be close to him at the time in hopes of getting entertainment from them to keep occupied.
He's never one to show it, but being at ease with things and taking them how they come doesn't exactly mean happy all the time. As his outlook is dim, he's always been a bit of a pessimist more than anything. He can take things without overacting because he's made it a point to always expect the worst out of most situations. Living in Wammy's orphanage, while being a high privilege, caused him to grow up too fast and see the world for what it really is. Studying crime cases, seeing what humans are really capable of at heart and what they would do to each other for no real reason. Those things pile up, caused him to take a deeper look at humanity in general and come to the conclusion that there's more bad in the world than there is good. Everything's corrupted beyond repair, and it was to be their job to make sure those who broke the law were brought to justice. But Matt couldn't believe in that, because it all seemed rather futile in the big picture of things. There was no direct black and white, no dividing line between good and evil. So he put his priorities in doing what he wanted to do, not what was expected of him to do.
Though at the same time, he could never get along with other people very well. Because in a place where becoming L is the dream of every kid, the one who's not even trying and is higher than almost all the rest isn't exactly looked upon fondly. Matt really couldn't care less. As far as he was concerned, they were all just tools anyways. Though that didn't stop him from feeling left out at times, he would always use his games or computer as a distraction so his mind had something to focus on. But out of all the kids, Mello was the one he could actually get along with. The only one who didn't seem blinded by the facts and ideals the others held. A pessimist like himself, but with enough motivation and will for both of them and then some. He looked up to Mello, but would never tell the other boy that because he felt it was just one of those things that he thought should go unsaid. At first it reminded him of the saying that every yin needs a yang, but then he would spend his time trying to figure out which out of the two of them were which. It didn't take him long to come to the conclusion that neither of them were either. They were the gray area, the ones who wouldn't set such pointless lines. Mello was a natural born leader and while before then Matt had never figured himself to be a follower, he had something that was at least worth being loyal to. Whatever Mello wanted, Matt would help him achieve.
Even with his friend abandoning the orphanage and joining up with the mafia, Matt still hung onto those beliefs. He didn't bother lending his assistance, because he knew that if he was needed he'd be contacted eventually. More of his patience, and his faith that knowing Mello he would need him sooner or later. And when the time finally came, he accepted his fate. The default part of his mind told him they were both going to die, that it was inevitable despite what Mello believed. But one part, the more loyal side that was more inclined to believe Mello simply because he was always right, figured that he may as well give it his best shot and make an attempt to get out of this alive despite knowing Mello had no intentions of it himself. When the bullets hit him though, he still held some sort of complicated satisfaction. Partly in the fact that his bleak outlook had been right all along and partly that despite it all, he had helped Mello achieve what he needed to. His death wasn't meaningless, wasn't boring. Hell, almost something straight out of one of his video games even. His last breath even was used to take a final drag of his cigarette, that's how much it didn't bother him. Besides, it wasn't like he had to worry about cancer or something.
☓ Abilities: Third highest scores out of all the children in Wammy House, Matt's been a genius since childhood. His specialty and interest was in computers and hacking, and at Wammy's it's said that each child was given their own personal tutors based on their strongest points. He's also seen often working with spy equipment, setting up cameras and bugs while working with the minimal equipment set up in a run down apartment.
☓ Weaknesses: Matt is a very lazy and unmotivated person. Basically, the place where potential goes to die. He has the capability to pull off several things and get much further in life than he has, but he never takes it. He just doesn't care and doesn't put time and effort into something unless it's important to him. Which is mostly wasted on his video game obsession. He also seems to have an addictive personality judging from not only his gaming habits but also the fact that he's a chain smoker. Easily addicted to simple things and obviously never knows when it's time to quit despite the harm it's causing him.
On top of that, he's also arrogant to the point where it cost him his life. He automatically assumed that the bodyguards would take him in for questioning and he'd be able to easily escape before they could get to him, thinking that the guns pointed on him were just a bluff. He was confident that he was correct in his assumptions but obviously, very very wrong as they shot him on sight just as he barely manged to finish his sentence.
☓ Strengths: As a child taken in by Wammy House Matt was a child genius. He was even third place in the entire orphanage despite putting little to no effort into it, thus showing he may have had potential to do much more than he got by with. He has quick reflexes and a sharp eye, though mostly uses those skills for his video games. But his analyzing and problem solving skills are also high rate, also, put to waste on his games. However he is seen working with surveillance equipment and other spy gadgets and computers showing that his main specialty probably lies in computers and electronics in general.
Not a special ability, but note worthy none the less, Matt is a very patient person. Be it working through multiple difficult levels on his video games, sitting in front of a monitor and checking for even the smallest detail or just sitting back and listening to someone rant and rave as much as they want, Matt can take it all in stride. He doesn't lose his cool and is able to analyze things as they come.
☓ Intranet post sample: [A dry laugh is the first thing that's picked up by the mic, a bit static ridden for a moment before it clears up.]
This thing actually works? And here I was half expecting nothing but white noise when I turned this old piece of junk on.
[A sigh, almost shaky but the uncertainty is covered up by a bored tone. Make light of things, don't let anyone know that this place is starting to freak you out already.]
Alright, assuming this really does broadcast to some network is there anyone out there who can tell me just what this place is? Because right about now I want to guess it's some sort of personal Hell made up of horror based video games for the purpose of irony.
[A pause, silence as he considers if it's even worth bringing up.]
And does anyone know if I can find a pack of smokes around here?
☓ Log post sample: One would think the pain of dying would leave a scar on a person's mind, leave them shaken up and scared of anything they happen to see if by some miracle they opened their eyes again. One would not, however, expect them to sit on the beach and lean back on their hands, surveying their surroundings with a blank expression. But that's exactly what Matt did. He knew he specifically remembered being in the middle of that street, felt the bullets pierce his chest and god knows how many other places. And another memory after that. Not as vivid, but no less painful. Out on a boat, idly wondering if such an ocean could possibly be the river Styx, or some other bullshit like that. The unsteady waters, falling into that dark abyss and the moments of panic as he realized he couldn't reach the surface. Lungs felt like they were exploding, collapsing under the lack of air before he couldn't hold it any longer and water filled them before everything went black. If Matt had to chose, he knew he'd probably pick being shot over drowning again. A lot more blood, but a lot more quick. Slow deaths officially sucked.
But that still lead him to his current predicament. Woken up by the waves against his legs, beached on an unknown island. If he was counting right, which he was pretty sure he was since it's really not something you can miscount on, that would make two very vivid deaths. So why was he still alive and breathing? The holes in his clothes proved well enough of the events that took place, the soreness in his body pointing to it as well. But no open wounds, blood probably washed away by the salt water. Great combination there, he's really not surprised he feels like crap.
A few moments pass where all he did was continue to observe the beach, looking for any sign of movement. Be it human, animal or some form of death god even, not much would surprise him at that point. He wasn't sure how long he sat there, his mind everywhere and no where at once, but eventually he realized that nothing and no one was coming so he may as well have a look around the island. Hopefully it was inhabited, modern preferably. Not that he had anything against island cultures, but he doesn't need to check his pockets to know that the water ruined his only pack of cigarettes and replacing them was more or less top priority.
Slightly stiff movements as he pulled himself to his feet, a wince and a bit of stretching to try and shake it off. He'd say that he felt like death warmed over, but he still wasn't certain that that wasn't the case currently. After a quick once over of himself, useless cigarette pack tossed to the sand and slight relief to find his gun still hidden under his shirt, he turned and made his way down the beach to start doing a bit of exploring on this mystery island.
