Price-jacking plane ticket prices?

Ok this just makes no sense to me.

I've gone through to see how much it would cost from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to Pittsburgh. Each price varies but that's where it begins to get annoying.

Sydney and Melbourne if I was to book for the 1st of April, 1st of May, 1st of June or 1st of July to Pittsburgh are $300 less then if I was to book on those days in Brisbane. The only day that's average on all 3 (no price difference) would be the 11th of March at $1200 (give or take a few dollars). When I look at this day, it would be bloody cheaper just to book a flight from Brisbane to Sydney (cheap flights are $100 or less if you grab a bargain-basement price), then catching it up to Pittsburgh from there (would save $200 but that's money in my pocket and not theirs).

How do these flight mobs go about cheap-scaping people like this by jacking up prices?

I'll be waiting till it gets closer to the 1st of July to see how far the price drops, because I want to get to AC2K9. I'm still saving but if I can catch a deal that won't chew through my savings, it'll be bloody worth it!

However, since bills seem to raught me quite allot in the past few fortnights, I'm ending up close to flat-broke which means I really have to cut back on allot of things to make up for what I've lost.
