Stolen Seconds - I

Sleep eluded Renji. The same scene played every time he closed his eyes. His senses betrayed him. His fingers itched to be buried in dark hair. His tongue could still taste the saltiness of skin, still feel Byakuya’s lips. In the deep quiet of the night, he could hear his name on the breeze. The blankets bunched tightly in his fists as he growled, sleepless. What he’d done had stayed in his head. It was affecting his work. He had taken his frustrations out on those ranked lower than him, picking arguments, striking out at them.

He rolled out of bed with a grunt. This would be another sleepless night. The streets of the sereitei were deserted- the night air was so much cooler than his room. A gentle breeze toyed with the sleeve of his robe, the call of the guard’s all clear finally reached him.

Renji stuck to the side streets and the shadows he wanted to clear his mind, not get sucked into meaningless conversations. He turned the corner, and grinned when he found the old training areas to be completely abandoned. Normally, he’d run into Madarame and be coerced into a few rounds, but thankfully the third seat had left for the night.

With his back against the training building a growling Renji rummaged through his pockets. At last, the snarl turned into a grin of triumph as the search produced a cigarette and match. He cupped his hand to protect the tiny flame. The paper lit, blue grey smoke curling into the night.

The full moon bathed everything in silver light casting shadows around the buildings he knew so well. Renji took a long drag. It was so quiet, so peaceful - so different from what he knew. Closing his eyes, he willed himself to relax. He’d never get to sleep if this continued. Moments later, a solid force collided with him- it caused him to lose his balance. His mouth worked before he could properly think.

“You had better apologize, jackass.” Renji snapped. He stooped to pick up the still smoldering cigarette. “You’ve pissed off the wrong person-"

“Is that so?” A calm almost amused voice cut through his ranting “Well then, Vice Captain Abarai, perhaps you should fight me. That’s what awaits those who have upset you lately.” The speaker paused. Internally, Renji screamed; he knew that voice even without looking. “Am I mistaken? Or have you taken to only showing your anger to your subordinates?”

“No sir.” He hadn’t noticed his captain’s approach.

“Walk with me.” The command was so simple, so normal that he fell into step with Byakuya without a second thought. Renji opened his mouth, only to close it again -quickly. It wasn’t often he was speechless - it wasn’t a comfortable sensation. They walked side by side, close enough that the edge of the captain’s robe brushed against his leg.

He suddenly felt awkward and clumsy, his hands sweating. He scowled, balling his hands into tight fists - he was shaking. Anger flooded his system- he wasn’t sure what to do with the strange emotions that coursed through him when he was near the other man. Byakuya was his captain, a worthy opponent, someone worth beating.

“What’s wrong Renji?”

“Why are you out here?”

A hint of a smile crossed Byakuya’s face. “I wasn’t aware I had a curfew.”

Renji simply grunted in reply.” Sir, why are you out here?”

“I couldn’t sleep. I’ve had too many things on my mind. Walking helps.” The captain replied- no hint of sleepless nights on his face.

Renji’s heart pounded in his chest wildly. Byakuya couldn’t possibly be talking about what had happened. He was certain the captain had pushed it out of mind. They were still walking very close to each other; he could feel captain’s spiritual pressure all around him, as it pressed against his own. Maybe Byakuya had put it all to rest. Relief flooded over him, followed quickly by sadness and then sudden rage. Was he really that forgettable?

“I also needed to speak with you.” The captain spoke again as he stopped walking. His hand on Renji’s elbow holding the other man in place. “What were you thinking? How would you have explained yourself if someone had seen you?”

“Are you asking me to explain myself, sir?”

The captain shook his head, “You rush into things without thinking Renji. How would you react if you had walked in on that? If you continue to do things like that- at least be ready to explain your actions.” Before he could speak the captain’s mouth was on his, gentle, almost hesitant. Renji’s only reaction was to tug the other man closer to him.

His second kiss was rougher. A crush of lips and bodies; it was everything possessive and unrelenting. Renji whined low in his throat, surprised by his own willing submission, Hands tugged his hair down. Fingers knotted in it. His head was pulled back, neck exposed to the night and Byakuya. Lips and tongue caressed his skin, his voice murmuring his captain’s name. His whole body felt as though it was on fire. It was hard to think, speak - breathe.

Renji cried out, body arching when the teasing scrape of teeth pinched his skin. The curve of his neck throbbed even as Byakuya’s tongue soothed over the mark. He panted, the blood pounded in his ears and chest. His mouth was claimed again, the kiss so soft and gentle his knees gave out and he sagged shaking against Byakuya.

“Go to your quarters and sleep Renji.” Lips brushed his ear, and teeth nipped playfully. “I expect you to be back to normal tomorrow morning.” Another slow, mind numbingly gentle kiss was pressed to his mouth before Byakuya was gone and he was alone. For the first time in weeks he felt tired.
