Summary: They were a curiosity for us.
We hadn’t learned the word in school, because, after all, Thamasa was our world. But before we learned what “foreigner” meant, before we really had had opportunity or reason to ask, there they were.
They, both the group of ragtag warriors and the sleek troops with their metal armor reflecting the hot overhead sun and their tan faces and their terse speech, were a curiosity for us, and we peeked out from behind trees and bushes, naively believing that our small size and poorly camouflaged hiding places made us invisible as we tittered with laughter and covered each other's mouths to avoid making too much noise and stole curious glances at each other's reactions. Still, we were nothing noteworthy in terms of a curiosity to them, and they stomped on right past us, their sight fixed on the mountain range in the distance.
We giggled and ran back to playing hopscotch and let the incident slip from our minds. But something nagged at me, the realization that there were people besides those in Thamasa. I thought about my mother, and about my father. I had thought I would never know either of them.
That was before that day.
