"That rocked!!" Her own voice is the first thing she heard. "See you in Hell, Evil Magistrate!!!" Her voice is pitched deeply, imitating someone else. Everything is dark, but she knows she's excited for something she's just seen. Her mouth still tastes of something sweet and something separately fizzy, also sweet.
She knows she's holding something because another voice - Truth's - comes to her ears, "Whoa! Stop waving that broom around!"
Apparently she was engaged in this broom-waving because her next words are surprised. "Oh, Nick!" (Who is Nick? she wonders, but soon the words are moving on.) "I didn't know you were here!" She claps her hands together quickly.
He's indignant as he replies, "Of course I'm here!" There's a pause and this Nick - Truth? - continues. "What was that surreal show you were watching?"
She feels shock, disappointment, outright disbelief! that Nick wouldn't know this. "What?! Nick, you mean, you don't know the Steel Samurai!?" She continues explaining. "He's only the most popular TV hero for young people!" There are swooshing sounds as she begins to swing the broom again around the room.
Truth's still confused. "Young...? Like, how young?"
Her voice is sheepish as she replies. "Umm... 10 years old?"
It's his turn to be surprised. "Then what the heck are YOU doing getting all excited?!"
Now she turns on him, outraged all over again. "Hey! I'm only 17!" As if this makes total sense, she adds, "That's seven- "teen." See? I'm a teen! Not like you, Nick."
"Hey! Don't talk to me like I'm your grandpa or something. I'm only 24 myself." By his tone, Medium guesses he's touchy about age.
She moves on fairly quick. "Then watch it with me! He's really cool! And... it's really popular!" Her reasoning moves on to real statistics. "When they asked grade school kids what they wanted to be, "Steel Samurai" was number 1!"
His tone is flat as Truth replies, "I really worry about kids these days."
"Gramps!" There is some movement around the office as she notices something. "Well, the Steel Samurai is over. I guess it's time to close up the office."
"I guess..." Truth says. "Wish we had some clients!"
She claps her hands again. "It'll be okay." Her optimism shines through. "I'm sure some big client is just around the corner!"
Nick is not so convinced, giving a hmph.
Everything goes silent, the taste running back out of her mouth, sweetness replaced with oats.
