Wow, I am having such a "my faith in humanity is renewed" moment.

At some point last Sunday, when my car was parked in my assigned spot at my apartment building, someone scraped it very badly, leaving deep gouges all along the driver's side, knocking off one of my hubcaps, doing what appears to be at least a few thousand dollars worth of damage. I discovered this Monday morning--there was no note, of course, and while I thought I was okay because the lot has cameras, my property manager promptly informed me that those had been turned off for months. I filed both a police and insurance report, but without anything to go on but the scrapes on the car, they couldn't do anything but take reports (my insurance will cover it, of course, but without another party with insurance to pay for the damage, my $500 copay applies, which is a fuck of a lot of money around the holidays).

This morning, though, I came down to find a note on my car, just "Please call" and a number. I promptly called and left a message, and of course he called back when I was in a meeting, but there was a message on my voicemail apologizing profusely for hitting my car and saying he'd call back. It's possible he doesn't have insurance, which would leave me in the same boat I am now, but still... after nearly a week, he came back and left a note and took responsibility. How great is that?

I've been fighting with health insurance and work has been completely hellish and I'm stressed about family stuff and the car was basically the straw that broke the camel's back, but god, this makes me feel so much better. Even if it doesn't actually change anything. Yay for people not being douches.

ETA: I just talked to him, and not only does he have insurance, but he wants to come over tomorrow to apologize in person. How amazing is that? Jesus, I never would have thought having someone hit my car and then take a week to take responsibility for it could make me feel this much better about the world, and yet.
