The new Mountain Goats album is, as will surprise a grand total of no one, awesome, and John Darnielle's Colbert appearance delighted me no end, both because he was as wonderful as ever, and because Colbert is so clearly a huge fan. I didn't think anything could make me love Colbert more, but goddamn, this did it and then some. He doesn't just love TMG, and he didn't just bring them on to give them the Colbert bump--he actually streamed the whole album at ColbertNation.com for 24 hours after the showing. Though I am torn between hoping this translates into huge sales and really never wanting TMG to hit the tipping point. I'm not usually music snobbish like that, but it's the Mountain Goats. It's John fucking Darnielle. I don't want my personal god to get too commercial!

The interview was, as I said, delightful, and Darnielle's description of naming his band after an animal because of its suicidal arrogance was almost as adorable as his monologue about his hypochondria at the show I saw at the Empty Bottle in 2004, and Colbert summed up Darnielle's music as "cheerful desolation," which is probably the best and most succinct description I've heard yet (followed by "'Is that all you got, old man?' as you shake your fist at god," which made me laugh and laugh it's so apt, particularly about the Alpha Couple songs) and you should all watch it and then go buy the album and then buy every other album he's ever made that still in print and then spend massive amounts of time tracking down all the others and a shitload of live bootlegs to round out your collection. Not that that's what I did when I discovered him eight years ago or whatever. Really. I could never be monomaniacal like that!

Anyway. Here are the clips, first the interview, then the performance of Psalms 40:2, which is my favorite song on the album so far, though that's likely to change the more I listen to it:

New Sam&Dean tonight! And for the first time in a really long time, I'm confident that it WILL be Sam&Dean. This is a delightful feeling. Please dear god, Kripke, don't let me down. I can't take any more heartbreak!
