Support Disaster Relief in Haiti

Jan 15, 2010 19:55

I got an e-mail today from a friend, telling me one of her brothers was in Haiti in a humanitarian mission from his university. So far he's  considered lost due to the fact that his body is yet to be found  but as time passes by the possibilities to find him alive are becoming slim.

Knowing all I could do is  give a reply to her e-mail with some  petty sentences of  hope, disbelief or 'I'm sorry to hear that' seemed pretty pointless and even felt a little ashamed to do it. I am in a lost of words, what can you say to someone who's going through something like that?

I had already donated to the American Red Cross, after seeing the footage in the morning News I thought   'skipping dinner and  a movie with friends on Saturday night to donate $25-$30 to the Haiti victims is OK' , and even  felt good about it.... But after receiving my friend's e-mail I felt it really close to home, I guess. All I can do is wonder what those $25 I donated are good for? with so many people dying and suffering barely recovering from the 2008 disaster... and in the back of my mind I'm hoping my donation will be used to something less sinister like food instead of body bags.

I know many of us are too young, or college students (or recently out of college) with debts, and money is difficult for many right now, but even a dollar, or a can of food is good right now. Go to your local Red Cross and donate  whatever you can, food, money, clothes, anything goes. If you have a way to to donate online, there are many organizations  which are helping the cause right now and can use some more funds, like UNICEF, CARE, DIRECT RELIEF, YELE HAITI, RED CROSS, MERCY CORPS, DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS, & ETC.

Spread the word to your F-list and family. I know many of us watch the news and we all say 'OMG that's awful', but writing this entry I'm hoping even one single person reading it which hasn't help yet,  helps like many have done it already. Spread the word, make those around you actively help.

personal shit, haiti relief
