Since last we spoke I have attended the 2015 Glasgow Film Festival. While it was good it wasn't as good as it has been for the past couple of years but to be fair last year was spectacular and this year was inevitably going to be found wanting in comparison. Saying that all 10 films I saw were interesting and enjoyable on some level. My highlights however were:
Man From Reno - A very enjoyable crime thriller that was like a mash up of Agatha Christie and True Detective.
Coming Home - The new film from Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li with not a crouching tiger or flying dagger in sight. It's a return to Zhang's earlier, quieter, work and explores dementia in a far more subtle way than the trailers for Still Alice suggests it does. I cried through most of it.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - On twitter a fellow festival goer remarked after this screening that there was no way to say how much you loved this black and white feminist vampire western set in Iran without sounding like a total hipster and he was absolutely right. I still loved it to bits and have downloaded the soundtrack.
In non festival film news I have watched The Wolf of Wall Street which was grotesque, often hilarious and about 45 minutes too long.
I have also been to the theatre to see seminal Scottish play The Slab Boys. Lots of quality banter but I could have done without the 10 minutes of slapstick that opens act 2.
