Review Tuesday, in more ways than one

Had my six month review at work today. I am not being sacked but may receive a letter saying I am, don't ask. I should have a job till March 2012, after that they aren't sure what my current role will morph into. Still it's over a year away so not much point worrying about it!

Now on with the regular reviews!

I have been watching the first few episodes of season 2 of Glee. I have now had enough of season 2 of Glee. It would be perfectly good escapist TV, despite the fact every episode is essentially the same, if not for the fact the of show's insistence that Lea Michele is the best. singer. ever. She's got a horrible tone to her voice and all the other female singers are much better. I'm sure there's something interesting on BBC4 about steam engines I could be watching instead.

Last week I read First Love by Ivan Turgenev which I thought was a lovely little novella which prefectly illustrated the obsession and awkwardness of being a teenager "in love" while alluding to the fact that love as an adult isn't much better. Get a pet, that's my advice.

On the film front I watched at home That Hamilton Woman! and A Single Man. The former stars both Vivian Leigh and Olivier and I think only bats could hear my squees at certain points. I don't care how wrong it is, I'd watch that sex tape. Oh and the film was very enjoyable too. Unlike A Single Man which was fairly dire. It was like watching Colin Firth trapped in an 80's perfume ad. I'd be interested to read the book though as there was something interesting here, it was just bogged down in over styling.

At the cinema I saw Black Swan and loved it to bits. It's not a film for everyone, a love of ballet and old gothic melodramas is most likely needed to really enjoy it. Beyond the silliness (and there is a fair bit of that) I thought the film actually said something interesting about the connection between choosing to commit yourself to something as physically demanding as professional ballet dancing and the need to feel in control of something because of the very fact you don't feel in control.
