The prompt for this story was “Raiding the fridge,” submitted by dicreasy. This story fits into Already in Progress somewhere around Chapter 31 or 32.
Suitable for all ages.
Dramatis Personae
Trixie Sanders, new homeowner.
Tirtha Littledragon, her friend and roommate.
Setting
The kitchen.
TIRTHA (peering into the fridge): We have nothing to eat.
TRIXIE (coming up behind her): Of course we do. What are you talking about?
TIRTHA: (gestures) Look at this! A whole bunch of nothing. (picking up and putting down each item as she names it) Tabasco sauce. Salad dressing. This weird Far Eastern sauce that we don’t know what it is because the label is in some other language. Canned soup. Why on earth do we have canned soup in the fridge?
TRIXIE: What, you never heard of gazpacho?
TIRTHA: (turns to the top shelf) Oh, look. What is this huge white thing in the back?
TRIXIE: I don’t know. I don’t read Cyrillic.
TIRTHA: So why’d you buy it?
TRIXIE: It’s got a pretty label. See?
TIRTHA: Hmmph. And look at this: a six pack of beer, a big jar of candy corn, and a big jar of candy pumpkins. Why do we have those in the fridge?
TRIXIE: If you leave them out, they melt a little and stick together.
TIRTHA: And why are they in two different jars?
TRIXIE (matter-of-factly): Because you can’t mix your corn and your pumpkins. Everybody knows that.
TIRTHA: (moving on to the bottom shelf and crisper) Orange juice… orange juice… tropical orange flavored juice drink.
TRIXIE: Don’t look at me like that. Liking orange juice is not a crime.
TIRTHA: Mayo. Cantaloupe. Ketchup. A very elderly onion. An eggplant. What’s this? (picking it up) It’s shaped like an eggplant, but it’s green.
TRIXIE (dubiously): I don’t think that was green to start with.
(Both women contemplate the thing that probably wasn’t green to start with for a long moment. The Tirtha slams the fridge door and tosses the unidentifiable object in the trash.)
TIRTHA: Let’s call for a pizza.
TRIXIE: Good idea.
