I just got back from grocery shopping. This has never been my favorite task, and I usually feel resentful and irritated when I'm in grocery stores.
I have learned to use it as a form of entertainment, however. It is so interesting to stand in the check-out line and see what other people are buying. I am a smart shopper, if I do say so myself. I buy wholesome foods. No pre-packaged stuff like Hamburger Helper (Blech!), etc. I do occasionally buy an MJB rice mix, but not often. I prefer to make my own and purchase things fresh.
I was in a large store this morning and in front of me in the checkout line was a young woman with three small children. In her basket, which was filled to capacity, was every frozen child's dinner imaginable, HB Helper, ice cream, cookies, and other assorted junk foods with no nutritional value. There was not one fresh vegetable, not one piece of fruit, and not one meat item. The milk she had was three gallons of chocolate milk! Then, she paid for her groceries with food stamps!!!!! I think there should be a rule that if you are going to get food stamps, you should have to purchase nutritional foods with it. Oh - and then she pulled out a large wad of cash to pay for the non-food stamp items (i.e., two cartons of cigarettes, wine, beer and a cooked pizza). It makes my blood boil!
One of my favorite stories comes from an aunt. She called my grandmother one day laughing hysterically. She had just come from the grocery store and in the line in front of her was a young woman with a small child. In her cart she had bread, eggs and milk and . . . . a package of frozen french toast! How stupid is that?
One excuse people use for buying packaged foods is that they don't have time to cook due to work schedules, etc. To this I say - crappola! I worked a full time job and raised two kids and I cooked decent nutritional food every night. We did do pizza nights and went to fast food places once in awhile, but for the most part, I cooked good food. AND - it didn't take me anymore time to do that then it would have to put a box of chemicals, preservatives, additives, etc. together. It is a total myth that you have to spend hours in the kitchen preparing a meal. I can put a wonderful dinner together in about 30 minutes - start to finish. Its just laziness on the part of these people.
Okay - so enough of my rant. What people buy and eat is up to them and not my business, but I have a real low tolerance for lazy, stupid people who live for convenience.
Just one of my quirks - I'm not perfect either, God knows.
