I'm on a real LJ kick lately...hmm...anyway...
In life there are a bunch of so-called secrets for success. They can apply for anything...school, work, relationships. The thing is, they aren't really secrets at all. Sure, you have the golden rule and to embrace change and to absorb everything you can and to live as though your next breath will be your last. Everyone knows those...so how can they be secrets?
Here's one though. I don't know why I'm telling it, but I feel the need to write about it. And it's something that most people know, but it needs to be brought into the forefront.
In order to fully appreciate everything that comes your way and accept it, you need to have an ounce that doesn't believe you deserve it. If you think that you deserve it fully, you'll start acting as though it should come to you on a silver platter and then you'll come across as arrogant. If you get too comfortable in it, how does that really challenge you at all, and then you become stagnant. You'll lose what it is you had and you won't know how to think on your feet to get something new.
Subconsciously, you need to believe that no matter what, it's going to work for you. That foundation needs to be there and refreshed occassionally. If the foundation cracks, the house comes tumbling down. But if the house collapses, it can be rebuilt if you so choose...so long as the foundation is stable. Consciously, a little bit of doubt is important. It keeps you on your toes so that you're constantly aiming to please and keep trying. Besides, isn't it true that when you actively think that nothing can go wrong and you have everything you could ever ask for that something bad happens to put you back in your place?
Don't get me wrong...comfort is important as well. If you're not comfortable, you won't be your true self. And I'm not wishing ill will to anyone who thinks that they have everything they could ever want in an aspect of their life so that they can stop working and trying. All I'm saying is that too much comfort is a dangerous thing. It can lead to boredom eventually, which leads to either quitting or straying in the majority of cases.
So a "secret"...life isn't meant to be lived in a box. Allow yourself fun, learn everything you can, and never allow yourself to get too comfortable. The only true freedom is based on what you make it.
