morass

(noun) A soft wet area of low-lying land that sinks underfoot.

Synonyms:

quagmire, mire, swamp

Usage:

The path from the wood leads to a morass, and from thence to a ford, which, as the rains have abated, may now be passable.

which, as the rains have abated, may now be passable. Isn't that so touching? So poignant? It's a message of delicate hope.

If you have recently followed the path out of the woods, only to get stuck in a morass, then it is time to allow yourself a little optimism
