So, yesterday what may be the second biggest sport event in Europe started: the European Championship in (male) football. The biggest is obviously the World Championship in football. From the beginning I would say there have been some... scepticism about the Danish team's chances, as while we have a decent team, we don't have a top team. So the media has swung between a) sending footage from '92 - aka the champion ship 20 years ago -, where we weren't even supposed to go, we all thought about it as a holiday - oh the amount of beer the players drank! -, and won... the actual fucking championship, and b) going all "DOOOOOOOOOOOOM DOOOOOOOOOOOOOM DOOOOOOOM". While we have a decent football team and normally would have an okay chance to go to the next step, this year we have ended up in what is by some called "the Group of Death". Why? 'Cause the other three teams are the Netherlands, Portugal, and Germany. To those who don't know anything about European football: these are really fucking good teams! Like - really good teams. All three teams are believed to be able to fucking win it all.
So, today we met the Netherlands in our first match in this championship. Denmark hasn't (really) beaten them since 1967 and we have never won the first match in the European Championship (despite having had 7 chances). Not exactly the best statistics to work with.
Personally when I saw which teams we are up against I thought we would end at bottom with 0 or maximum 1 point, and, well, we may still end at the bottom, but...
WE WON
and now have 3 points. In theory we just have to make sure we don't loose against Portugal and Germany and then we'll continue to the quarter-finals.
Sure, we'll loose to most likely both Portugal and Germany, but still. This is a waaay better result than I thought - hell, almost dared hope for. We would have been happy with a tie with the Netherlands! -, and it warms my little football fanatical heart. If we - against more or less all odds - should actually win another match or continue to the quarter-final I'm going to be so happy. The Danish team came with the first surprise in this championship and pleeease let them come with more ♥
FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL. Ahem.
