Two unrelated thoughts: My cousin Aaron was called Bear by the family, though I don't think it ever caught on outside. (Aaron the Baron, Baron, Bear...) Last time I went to a family event, they were still calling him that (and so was I)
And sometimes, because I am Lyn to so many of my friends now, and when Rion was living with me & we were LARPing together, she'd introduce me to larp people as Lyn (and call me Lyn at home), sometimes I forget that I'm not Lyn when I leave work. <.< Social event? Must be Lyn there.
Well, the thing is, I've never really been [full first name] in social situations. I was [short form] for years. My parents don't call me [fill first name] most of the time (unless I'm in trouble); it's variations and nicknames. So being [full first name] was just-work for a very long time.
And in some ways, being Lyn for new-people replaced being [nickname] for a group that was, in parts, very toxic.
(James and DB & AWC still call me [nickname]. Even when around other people who call me Lyn. It's a little MPD-inducing ;-)

Is it easier being Lyn in social situations?

And yeah, you always were a nickname, I am glad Lyn is a better one with better associations for you.
