Friday: Coconut Delivers

Jul 17, 2009 00:39

Been a while, here's the harvest:

  • The video for "Heaven" by UNKLE is directed by Spike Jonez and Ty Evans. Boys on skateboards, explosions and sugar syrup slow motion. It's pretty much enough to warrant a Friday post, all on its own.

But I have much more love for you all today. Mostly centered around the delightful stylings of Señor Coconut. Wikipedia rather unfairly characterizes his music as "parody" but I hear "homage", personally. And from the YouTube clips I've seen of live performances, it looks like he's totally goin' to church with it, with an earnest affection for the sound.

    MP3
    • Trans Europe Express - Señor Coconut, covering Kraftwerk, and so: life is beautiful.
    • Sweet Dreams - Señor Coconut, with the Eurythmics classic. Though it's hard to fuck this up, the song is kind of bulletproof.
    • Around The World - Señor Coconut rocks this Daft Punk track, and it translates wonderfully. Very lush.
    • Smoke On The Water - Señor Coconut, doing Deep Purple up cha-cha style, mmm :I
    • Beat It - Señor Coconut, covering Michael Jackson. Because he's dead, okay. Anyway, the spritely marimba solo/percussion bridge is worth the price of admission.
    And now some Bonus:
    • 2 Wicky - Hooverphonic, with some 90s trip-hop.
    • Love For Sale - Lena Horne, singing an old Cole Porter gem.
    • S.A.L.T. - The Orb, with inspired conspiracy theory rambling over equal parts Big Beat/Dub/Chillout/etc. At least it's not another version of "Little Fluffy Clouds".
    • Don't Mug Yourself - The Streets; popcorny, I know. Look, I know.
  • friday, win, music
