Caught up on the first three episodes of Riverdale last night, and guys, I have thoughts.

How hard do I ship Betty and Veronica? SO FUCKING HARD. From basically their first scene together. Veronica sends her fucking roses, you guys. And flies in cupcakes from New York. And is trying so hard to be a better person. And makes sure everyone knows she and Betty are a two for one deal, so if you want one on your damn cheerleading squad, you take both. And and and and. I fucking love Veronica Lodge in this show, you guys. She is amazeballs, fierce and funny and just a little bit cruel still, and trying so, so hard to be better.

Josie and the Pussycats have no time for Archie's nonsense, and I love them for it, and for their awesome, gorgeous selves, and for their fierce protection of who they are and what they are doing. Josie is fantastic, and I love how witty her smart, sharp responses are.

Jughead is a delight, and I hope he and Betty spend a billion breaking news and telling stories. I am frustrated as hell that they aren't writing him as asexual from the beginning; I understand the showrunner said that this is a reboot, a story of finding themselves, and so maybe that means they well address his asexuality in the future, but it's still fucking erasure, and it's shit.

So much love for Kevin, and I am watching his interactions with Moose with a lot of interest.

I like Archie best when he's dealing with his dad and his music, expected to be more apathetic to his character (as I am the comics character), but the actor is winning me over. HATE the fucking storyline with Ms Grundy, though, which IS ABUSIVE AND FUCKING ILLEGAL AND SHE IS TERRIBLE.

While I know people would revolt if there wasn't a love triangle, I deeply do not want it. Or, if it happens, I wish it was an actual triangle with everyone falling for each other, and whether or not they poly it out (and I WISH THEY WOULD), there are complicated romantic feelings on all parts.

The basically incestuous relationship between the redheaded twins is freaky as hell, but I am super interested in what actually happened to Jason, and I really like Cheryl's character, though the performance by the actor is often shaky.

My biggest complaint so far is the mess that was the core of episode three. On the one hand, I fucking adored the fact they addressed slut shaming and athlete abuse and bullying, and in really amazing ways. ("Full dark, no stars" may be my new battle cry.)

BUT.

For the most part, this story turned on a black boy being a sexual threat toward white girls. (I know Veronica is Latina here, which is a casting choice I fully support, but most of the other girls involved are white.) And that is some racist fucking bullshit. I wish they'd told this story in a way that didn't make the one black boy we've seen with a decent sized role a sexual predator. Fucking hell.

I love the look of the show, how twisted and unrealistic it is, the water and the strange clothing choices (really, heels and all white to go boating, CHERYL?), and the sinister thread that runs through everything. I adore Jughead as the narrator, and love the hell out of these characters. I'm really looking forward to more.

Too, I desperately want the supernatural version of this show, with Betty the sweet, good-hearted witch, and Archie the son of a siren (so many thanks to a friend for that idea), and Veronica the werewolf, because she basically made herself fucking Little Red Black Riding Hood the first time she walked into Pop's. Reggie the incubus, maybe, and (another suggestion from a friend) Moose the Weremoose, because how terrifying would that be? I may have to write some fic.
