[fandom] Star Trek

I went to see the new Star Trek last night with raz0rgirl. Our showing wasn't sold out, which I enjoy because I dislike being shoved into a theater full of other people, but it was strangely not very fannish either. I missed getting to share geek joy with a theater full of other geeks. Apparently the show an hour or so before ours was full, according to the woman at the concession stand where I bought my soda and nachos.

I wasn't really looking forward to the Star Trek movie. For one thing, while I grew up with Star Trek, I am definitely a TNG woman. Picard's my favorite captain; Worf is my favorite character. I love TNG, and though I'd watch the original, I always felt a little disconnected from it. I loved it because it led to TNG, mostly, because it was history. Plus I'm not a big fan of movies which go back to the beginning - Star Wars epically failed, but Wolverine wasn't so hot either. (I have less fear for The Hobbit, probably because the book was my favorite growing up.)

So I expected to go in and watch Star Trek and have a fun time, but I expected it to mostly be fun because of my love for Star Trek in general and maybe the so-cheesy-and-stupid-it's-fun factor (I watch a lot of movies for this reason - Doomsday, Babylon A.D., Chronicles of Riddick, I'm looking at you).

I didn't expect it to be absolutely awesome in its own right. I didn't expect to love it.

And then there's the stuff I hate.

It's very much a love-hate thing for me, and I really, really didn't expect that. Like and hate, maybe.

I want to see it again.

My favorite thing ever? Uhura and Spock being so fantastic together and making out left right and center while being awesome. Mostly Uhura being awesome.

Uhura and the Klingon message and being an awesome linguist.

I love the AU timeline. I am a huge fan of AUs and travel through time and space and, most important, one thing different leading to HUGE GIGANTIC CHANGES everywhere else. That is one of my favorite things.

I really, really like this Kirk. A lot. I was not a fan of the original Kirk, but this cocky, overblown, flirtatious, death defying mess of a boy is awesome. I love the genius, the geek mixed in with the stuntboy.

Bones treating and mistreating Kirk with the diseases was hilarious. I did not expect to enjoy a running (literally!) gag so much.

Car chase and cliff. I like cars, car chases, and cars exploding off cliffs.

Kirk and Spock after the Kobyashi Maru test. I love that Spock designed the test, I love that Kirk cheated, and I love that they basically hate each other at this point.

I basically went into this knowing nothing about the casting, so I loved being surprised by Scotty. Who was quite fun and awesome. And Karl Urban as Bones! Unf.

The fact that the planet of ice and snow made me want a Star Trek/Chronicles of Riddick crossover.

Of course, what I hated most was the treatment of the women. And it really, really kills me that they can reset the franchise, have this awesome AU world, make all these changes and yet the women still get shafted. As much as I love Uhura, where were the women? The women who could fight with their hands? The women who could help save worlds? The women who were bad guys? The women who were more than mothers and love interests? The women who didn't have to wear goddamn miniskirts in uniform.

I'm not sure how I feel about Spock's mother. On the one hand, I like the parallel between Kirk's dad and Spock's mom. On the other, woman's death as impetus for a man to fill-in-the-blank bothers me a lot.

I thought some of Future!Spock's talk with Kirk about how he needs to be friends with Spock a little heavy-handed, but it's such an important relationship I think I've basically convinced myself to ignore it.

Basically, why can't the women be awesome too? Seriously?

I think I'm going to have to get dinner soon. I had a delicious big salad for lunch, but I'm hungry again. I don't know what I want. A cake, maybe. (I'm watching Ace of Cakes.)
