I used to be of the school of thought that I'd rather not get a stage name for belly dance. It just wasn't my cup of tea, and everyone in town knew me anyhow.
But i just moved to Denver, and will soon be in the process of trying to land paying gigs and starting some classes, maybe eventually a performance troupe of my own.
Becuz the city is larger, I am going with the "dance name for safety" theory. Also, my name is Laura, very WASP, and as much as I love my name (sure, whatever), I do want something different for dance. It's just that I want it to still be ME, and I don't want to be playing into the "orientalist" cliche...
(please don't flame me and ask what i mean by that. there was an in depth discussion of that concept a while ago...maybe i'll link it if anyone is interested)
Well, ladies: this community used to be my favorite dance forum, so I'm going to run the names by you first! Let me just figure out how to do a lj cut...
Let me tell you a little bit about myself, and my dancing style, to let you know the route I'm looking to go with a name: I've been doing cabaret since 1999, and had been with the same group of girls/troupe since then. I was often used as the comedic relief for our 'less serious' routines, and I loved that part of it. My dance style, compared to my ex-partners', is more energetic, flamboyant, commanding, and exuberant.
My real name starts with an L, and my nickname that everyone calls me starts with an S, so I'd like to use one of those. I don't think I want a first and last name, but I would be willing to do it if the name were worth it.
oooohkay, here we go with the ones i've scribbled down as at least possibilities:
Samar - Arabic, conversations at night. Samirah - woman who entertains
Bahira - dazzling Asianne - the rising sun Aden - firey one
Isra - journeying by night Levina - old English, bright flash
Xaviera - Arabic, brilliant or bright. Spanish, "of the new house."
(Xaviera is the name i'm considering as a 'last name', what do you think???)
i'm so pouting about this whole process. I just don't FEEL like a Samira or Levina :( but to start my own belly dance business, I do believe it's going to be best for me to get a name that people will be intrigued by, and eventually I know I'll grow into a persona.
Anyways, you wise sage dancers of the livejournal, I want your BRUTAL honest opinion of the above selections.
Thanks :D
