um. hi. i don't think you'll remember me, but i have a question for you.
btw that's a really weird story, and i don't even know about that.

i know this is really strange, but about this time last year, i posted on dreadgrrls looking for someone to do my dreads. you responded, and so did this other girl who lived in niagara falls, and i ended up going to her cause i wanted to go to the falls.
well, that was about the worst decision ever. the girl totally screwed them up, and i ended up pulling them out after a couple months because they were falling out on their own anyways.
well, it's been a great deal of time since i took them out, and i really feel sad that i couldn't have kept my dreads. so i'm looking to get them re-done.

so, my question for you, is this. do you still do them? can you do them for me within the next couple weeks? do you still live in ohio?
i know this is strange, but i do want you to know, i had to go through the dreadgrrls archive to find you, and it would mean a lot to me if you could do this. i loved my dreads and want them back, this time permanently, and i need someone who has a professional attitude to do it right. (um, that girl left to smoke a bowl in the middle of doing my hair)
plz get back to me, if you respond to this, i'll get the email.

Yes, I still do dreads. Yes I still live in Ohio. However, it might be tricky to get them done in the next couple of weeks on such short notice (feb. is really busy for me), though we can try to find sometime that works for both of us...

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but you now understand how important it is to find someone who you can see examples of their work and who will do they kind of dreads YOU want. And because of this, i want to doubly make sure that you want the kind of dreads that i do...ok? So, i would like you to give me as detailed as possible info about your hair in the condition it's in right now, and get me pics of people's dreads that you like, and do as much research as you can on ways to make dreads and let me know what you're interested in.

also, we would need to speak of compensation, and I'm afraid I don't rmember if we discussed it last time, nor the terms we might have come to.

so, let me know as soon as possible about your hair, the dreads you want, the times you're free, and what you are looking to spend on getting dreads. oh, and if you have any record of our previous conversations, i'd love to go over that if you'd be so kind as to send me the link(s). to refresh my memory and all :).

as for the smoking a bowl during the dreading...well, to each their own as far as doing drugs, but I think it's unprofessional to do if your client doesn't smoke, and worse yet, it will make all dreads you touch after that smell like smoke, which *I* think is gross. no offense if you smoke, but i always tell people to cover their dreads with a hat if they are going anywhere smelly, be it near a deep fryer or around smoke in bars, or what have you. dreads soak up smells a lot, and are more difficult to wash/rinse, LOL.

my "recommendations" to prep for dreads-buy yourself some SEA salt, a spray bottle, a flea comb, a dread tam/hat, (blue plastic) floss threaders, some residue free shampoo, some protein enriched shampoo and conditioner (just small bottles, if possible), any dyes you want to use to change your hair color, some 100% aloe vera gel, some vitamin E capsules, and if so desired, some tea tree oil/other essential oils.
wash your hair and condition it with the protein stuff to get it as healthy as possible before dreading, you can do hot oil treatments, anything that makes your hair healthy and happy. especially if you want to dye it. do any dyeing at least a couple days, but not more than that before dreading, and wash your hair the DAY OF getting dreads, but make sure it has time to AIR dry completely. I will show you how to make a sea salt and an aloe/vitamin hair tonic, and those will be the only things you will need besides the residue free shampoo. I DO NOT recommend EVER using wax or anything else that will gunk up your dreads.

you should rinse your hair as often as it gets greasy/dirty/smelly, but make sure it has time to dry all the way out in between rinses. you can spray on sea salt spray after the rinse, or even on dry hair, and same with the aloe spray, though that should be used more lightly. you should wash your hair at least once weekly with the shampoo, and rinse very well. you should be prepared to build up some arm muscles trying to palmroll the back of your head, LOL. having helpers who live near you is awesome for the first year...after that, there's much less maintenance on mature dreads. but the back and sides will flatten in a heartbeat at first since you sleep on them. they need LOTS of work, and almost constantly. you should palmroll daly for a good while if you want nice even round dreads. the more you work on them, the faster they mature. be prepared for them to stick straight up for the first day or two, and to be very fluffy/fuzzy for the first month at least (depends again on how much you work on them-dreads love to be played with in appropriate ways, LOL).

I will show you all kinds of stuff you need to know for maintenance, and you will always be free to ask me advice.

hope that helps some!

hey! awesome. that's the best news i've heard all day.
okay, i know this is short notice, but my days off next week are wed/thurs. after that i have the 19-21st off, but we're supposed to be going to niagara falls in that time, but my boyfriend still doesn't have his birth certificate, and if you were to tell me you could do my hair then, we would just go some other time.

my hair is in pretty good condition right now. if you want pictures you can go to my myspace...

...i use really good conditioner, and i haven't dyed it in a while so it's not super damaged. it comes to just about my shoulders now, and i have bangs, which i would'nt want dreaded.

before they told me to stop using conditioner, and dry/damage my hair out as much as possible before dreading. ? you say to condition it, and get it healthy. doesn't conditioning keep it from dreading? just curious, you are the master, i am the grasshopper, i'm listening to you now!

i do have residue free shampoo. i have sea salt, the comb, rubber bands, "dread shampoo" + neutrogena residue free shampoo, a spray bottle, peppermint oil and some pretty cool hats left over from the first time.

the dreads i had before, were i guess medium sized, and super pillowey. when you say the "dreads i want" i guess i just want the kind that don't fall apart, or split into two. lol. i've seen people with thousands of little tiny ones, and people with maybe 20 huge ones. i would like just medium, something that looks like it covers my head, and when it grows out long doesn't look bad.

pictures of what mine used to look like, are here:

i can tell you what i don't want, is someone who twists them, and then when they start to come apart, they look like they are untwisting and it looks badddd *see, my myspace picture, with the pigtails, look at my two in the front* or someone who braids part of the dread. she did that too.

these are pictures of people who i think have cool dreads, though i would never use knotty boy stuff.

as far as money is concerned, you previously said it would be about $100 for shoulder length hair. my guy here, who is busy until june would be charging me $50....but i know that's a good deal. so i'll let you decide. i paid $85 the first time. i do work, but i don't get paid until next wednesday. i just wanted to tell you that so you don't think i'm a deadbeat. i have a good job. lol. it's your choice.

Ok, I will not be able to do this during a weekday because it will take most of a day and I'm a grad student. I might be able to do it on the 19th, though i have something to go to from 2-4pm. we could start a bit before that, preferably around 10am or so, and then finish up afterwards, and you could have a break in the middle to go grab a bite ot eat and relax your scalp (as could my hands, which will probably be a bit cramped after a while LOL.)

I backcomb in dreads, and this pulls on the hair. it can be a bit painful to have done, but it creates the knots that make for good, even dreads (IMHO). while damaged hair may knot up better, it also breaks easier, and will cause more fuzzies in the long run. you want healthy hair dreads, not half-broken ones, so that's why i recommend that. you can even put conditioner in mature dreads if they are damaged, though not often, and it takes FOREVER to rinse out, and you have to palmroll back in the fuzzies a bit extra if you do so. but it is possible to do without having them magically fall out, LOL.

i don't believe in using rubber bands, but on the other hand, it IS your hair, so once i've put int eh dreads, you are obviously free to do whatever you want. however, rubber bands may LOOK like they are holding stuff togethere, but they actually prevent knotting up, so they will just hide the problem, not fix it. better to be patient and palmroll than to hide it with rubber bands, IMO.

here are pics of the dreads i've done:

my fiance, his are about 3.5 years old right now (we did TONS of work on these)-

my little brother, brian, 12 hours after having the dreads put in. this IS how your dreads will look at first, so you know.

my little bro, with his dreads at about 2 years, and having them rebackcombed twice, and worked on several times, and having done little maintenance. (thus, please, please, PALMROLL and do the maintenence, or they will have loops and be crooked and all kinds of less-than-desireable stuff, IMO).

My friend mike, with his dreads about a year old. he did LOTS of maintenence, and his looked like this by about a couple months in, whcih is pretty fast.

my fiance had his hair shoulder length when i did his, and his hair was fine, thin, and straight.
same with my friend in the last picture, except his hair was at most ear length, so he got nubbies, LOL. my little borther's hair was somewhere in between the two in length, but his is think and coarser, but still straight.

yes! everything you say i agree with!i always thought rubber bands were bad, for that same reason, it seems like it hinders the dreading process.

okay. i'm going to put the 19th in my calendar as the day we're going to do this, cause even if we went to canada, we were going to go the 20th.

tell your fiance his hair looks amazing. my only hope is that mine looks that good in three and a half years.

you are a total godsend.
thanks soooo much.
