To give and to live.

Sometimes we moan about being in asymmetrical relationships: in which we give more than we get, and we care more than we think we should. The well in our hearts runs dry as we draw from it everyday, and yet get no replenishment in return, We are tired, we are discouraged.

And yet we don't realise that we are also in another asymmetrical relationship where the scales tip in our favour. One in which the other's constant faithfulness, sure as the rains powder the earth, is returned with fleeting beliefs that last as long as a morning cloud's spot in the sky. We have never been able to remain as faithful. And one in which the other's concern and care for us translates into full knowledge of our every day, our deepest hopes and fears, and yet what do we give in return? Half-hearted attempts at understanding the other's heart. Never mind whether we even come to understand it or not eventually.

(Dragging my head out of the fuzz of morning sleepiness to try to recall the various discussions and thoughts yesterday; Hosea 6.)
