europeans and their leaders are bigots with points of view that are narrow-minded and unfoundedly biased. their view of islam is only through that of what they see in iran and iraq under the law of dictators. they don't open their brains to see that the perception of islam as a fascist patriarchal religion that oppresses women only happens in a few countries where men manipulate islamic laws for their own political will. if you want to see islam at its best, it's in asia. not the middle east. the burqa does not oppress women, a woman is not forced to wear the burqa against her own free will. my friends who wear the burqa are beautiful, courageous, opinionated, strong-minded. look at
madcaplove, she is a red hot chilli padi with a mind and steely determination that could set her on course to be an MP or even a PM. MP halimah yacob dons the burqa, but it does not stop her from being the best that she can be, and commands so much respect in parliament and also at NTUC. these fine examples are women not hampered by the burqa, but embrace the burqa as part of their identity, allowing themselves to reach greater heights.
French president Nicolas Sarkozy cannot differentiate Islam and Islamism, instead he and other european leaders are confused by what each represents and everyone thinks the two are the same. they are not: they confuse our great religion as Islamism - a political system and not a religion, which i find is a great insult. western leaders think they know everything just because they are more advanced and have more access to knowledge. but they cannot distinct between two polar opposites because they are so rigid into thinking that both have warped and have evolved into one. i find it disturbing that supposedly liberal countries like these are adamant in oppressing and separating anyone from their religion. it sickens me to know that these hypocritical countries call singapore oppressive, when singapore thrives in allowing racial and religious freedom, and muslim women are allowed to don the burqa without any repercussions. therefore, western leaders (especially you, nicholas sarkozy) should stick your foot in your mouth before you state "facts" that are not even true.
wearing the burqa is not a sacrifice; but a commitment to the religion that is not only peaceful, but glorifies women and protects them from the evils of men. the burqa is not a symbol of oppression; the burqa represents the empowerment of a woman, because not only has she shown that she is mature enough to carry the responsibility of covering her modestly, but it reflects her strength in controlling her destiny: she ensures that any man besieged by her is not just entranced by her physical beauty, but by her own character and her ideologies/principles. a burqa is not a tool of pain: it enforces the purity of a woman.
you may think it's contradictory that i myself do not wear the burqa, but i have my own reasons. my parents have raised me as liberally as possible, and their religious lesson is always the same: the burqa is not something to be forced upon someone, it is a great responsibility that has to be undertaken only when one finds she is truly prepared to move into the next stage of life. i know that in the near future, i will be wearing my burqa, but it is not an object of oppression, but my own personal leap of self-empowerment.
