Carla paced around the hospital room not knowing what to do. She stared at her friend just lying on his hospital bed. She finally grabbed the chart and began scanning it for anything indication of what was wrong. He was unconscious, but he was stable. He had been admitted with shortness of breath and palpitations. The EMTs told them that he had been in and out of conscious the whole way to the hospital.
This was the first time she had seen JD in four days. He wasn’t at his apartment. He wouldn’t answer his phone. He had called in each day claiming he was sick, though she had never been the one to talk to him. It was like he had disappeared all together.
And now, here he was, still unconscious and lying in the ICU. It wasn’t exactly her favorite thing to go with her morning coffee.
“He had heart failure.” Carla quickly turned towards the door where Dr. Cox was standing; he was also nursing a morning coffee. Grabbing the chart he looked at the newest notes.
“How can he have heart failure? He’s perfectly healthy. I think he would know if something was wrong with his heart.”
“I don’t know yet, tests haven’t been conclusive.”
Carla looked down sadly, stirring idly at what was now a cold cup of coffee. “Can you page me when he wakes up?”
“No problem.” He watched Carla leave to help other patients. Dr. Cox sighed and took a seat next to JD’s bed. He kept looking at the chart going over everything repeatedly, looking for a mistake. He knew what was wrong; he didn’t want to admit it.
“Get out of here.” A groggy voice made the older doctor jump in his seat.
“Rise and shine Kelsey.”
“Perry, get the hell out of my room and stay out of here.”
“Newbie, you just had heart failure. I’m the best damn doctor in this dump, you need me in here.”
“No, I really don’t. I’d rather have another attending, hell even a resident. Just not you.”
Perry placed the clipboard down and reluctantly left. He paged Carla the second he was out the door and was not surprised to see the nurse show up in less than a minute. She didn’t even look at Dr. Cox and went immediately to JD’s bedside.
“Bambi, you scared us all.”
“I’m sorry. I’ll try to make sure it will never happen again.” She gave him a warm smile as she gently ran her fingers through his hair. JD finally spoke after a few minutes when he saw that Dr. Cox was still standing outside his door, watching both of them.
“Carla, can you just make sure a different attending is on this case?”
“Yah, why?”
“Difference of opinion.” He smiled, “I’m famished, can you grab me a sandwich or something?”
She gave him a funny look before getting up. “Yah, I’ll be back in a minute.”
She wasn’t surprised when Dr. Cox started following her down to the cafeteria.
“So, do you want to tell me what’s wrong with Bambi?”
“He has Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.”
“Wait, isn’t that...”
“Broken heart syndrome.”
“He isn’t depressed? He’s fine! He wasn’t even seeing anyone, but when I find that bitch I will...”
“It was me.”
“Oh.”
