Submitted for approval by the Midnight Society, I call this story... "The Fallen."
They sky grew darker as clouds began to consume the sky. A storm was sure to come, as we stood in the shadow of the Grim Monolith, and the mist of mana departing a form it had been summoned into was heavy in the air. The region was mountainous, my travels had left me to this valley, where through many prophets and wisemen, I I was told this place would be my destination.Across from me he stood. Necrophigus was a true menace and his empire had been spread far and wide since the beginning of his tyranny on this plane. As we stared eachother down his black, shredded robe began to flow in the wind. The clouds gave a blue overcast, making his twisted armor seem all the more threatening. Under his hood all I could see was the half of his face covered in armor, the rest shrouded in mystery. His glowing white eyes seemed to pulsate as did the mana collector in his staff.
"The winds are that of the great spirit. She is watching us, Necrophigus," I stated in a calm manner. Though I could not see it, I could sense a grin on what would be his facial expression, as he answered back. "She wishes to see the fate of this plane, and yours as well, Christoph. You have interferred with many of my plans, but my ingenuity is far greater than you can imagine. I control this world. There is nothing I value enough to not sacrifice it as a means of annihilating you." His voice echoed through this place What he said was true. He had nothing to lose, while I had everything to gain. "Then if you are so intent on ridding yourself and this world of me, then lets be started. You can make the first move." With that said, we both raised our staffs, and our battle began.
He raised his staff and summoned the corruptive powers of a wasteland not far away. He could both draw mana from this source as well as destroy a land I was drawing mana from by laying a curse on it. I was ready for anything he could possibly conjure. I did the same, sacrificing the wasteland's mana to destroy the wasteland he was drawing mana from as well. He appeared to glare at me, and I let a faint smile spread across my face. His eyes began to narrow. He once again raised his staff. "I summon the mana of the Shivan Reef!" I knew this world well. He could draw generic mana from that location, and red or blue at the cost of a small ammount of his life force. "I see you know this world well, Necrophigus." "As do you. But do you know me well enough? I summon the power of the Sol Ring!" I quickly raised my staff yelling "Force of Will! I will sacrifice my Daze spell to counter your summoning of the Sol Ring." With that the Sol Ring's power vanished. He cursed. "It appears you know your spells very well. For your sake, I hope you have just as many ways of making solutions as you do coming up with answers."
As he spoke I used the power of a Polluted Delta at the cost of a small amount of my life force to search the land for a volcanic island so I could summon red and blue mana for myself. "I summon Grim Lavamancer." With a wave of my staff out of the mana came into existence the Lavamancer. This was my solution to his so-called win-condition. The thunder in the distance set the mood as the intensity began. He used his staff to summon the mana capabilities of the City of Traitors underneath Volrath's Stronghold on Rath. He would beable to draw quite a bit of generic mana from that place. "I summon forth a Goblin Welder!" This goblin was powerful, and was the reason I summoned my Lavamancer. It has a Magic ability to sacrifice an artifact it's master controls to bring one back to life that's been destroyed or damaged. He was right about his ingenuity. "Its yours, Christoph." I reached across to a Faerie Conclave not far from where the region of Tolaria used to be. I would beable to summon forth a creature out of this land as well. I then tapped into the volcanic island for red mana and killed his Goblin Welder. I knew I had the upper hand, and that there was no possible way for him to win.
He played spell after spell, summoning lands and artifacts, but I continued to destroy and counter his summonings. I had also summoned an ancient artifact called the Null Rod, which has a magical potency that disables artifacts from using their magical abilities if they must be activated to use them. Eventually I had him in a lockdown. He was defeated, and his tyranny had ended. He had tried to tap into his Mana Vaults and Crypts, he reached across to the distant plane of Mirrodin to summon the Glimmervoid's golden energy, and even the Great Furnace and Seat of the Synod, but in the end, his power was no match for my humble approach to magic.
