I went to Funimation studios, and they work really hard. Fruits Basket was a very good dub, in my opinion, and most of Funimation's VAs come from that area, in Texas.
While I can't quite comment on the situation with the subtitles (as I don't know any eastren languages), I can comment on the price. My friend and I used to shop at Suncoast for our animes, gagging everytimes those $30 DVDs were rang up. However, when we went to Besy Buy for some coomputer stuff, we noticed that they had anime. For about $10 or more cheaper. So, I think that it's not Funimation's or Whoevers fault after it gets to the retailer's shelf, you know? :3 Maybe try to buy your anime from a cheaper store like amazon.com or Best Buy?
About the teenyboppers - you hit the nail on the head. Hard. Do it again. I really, really hate when this happens to good animes that start to get popular. It's not BAD that they get popular..that means more merchindice like keychains and stuff to put on your purse, and it's also kinda selfish to want to hold a good series away from others...However, some people shouldn't see things because they tend to take the characters, rape them of any personality, and toss them into some PWP Yoai fanfiction. YAY.
